Job description
Clinical Fellow in Infectious Diseases (SHO)

This post is based on the Infectious Diseases ward at St Mary's Hospital and is offered as two consecutive six-month appointments, commencing in February 2026 and August 2026 respectively. Alternatively, the post may be undertaken as a single twelve-month appointment. The position is designed for doctors with SHO-level experience who are seeking to develop their careers in Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, or Virology.

Main duties of the job

The role involves supporting infectious diseases ward cover in collaboration with IMT 1, including cross-cover during annual or study leave. You will provide high-quality care to inpatients and outpatients, actively participate in clinical activities such as ward rounds, clinics, and multidisciplinary team meetings, and contribute to departmental initiatives including teaching, audit, quality improvement, and academic seminars. This position offers the opportunity to gain extensive experience and knowledge in managing a wide range of infectious diseases.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will play a key role in delivering high-quality care to patients with infectious diseases, both in inpatient and outpatient settings. Working under the supervision of the consultant of the month and alongside registrars and an IMT1 SHO, the role involves supporting ward cover, including cross-cover during annual or study leave, and actively participating in all aspects of clinical care. This includes ward rounds, ward work, weekly infectious diseases clinics, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings such as TB, ID-Microbiology, and Radiology MDTs.

In addition to clinical duties, the post-holder will contribute to departmental activities, including teaching, audit, quality improvement projects, and academic seminars. Clear documentation and effective communication within the MDT are essential. The fellowship offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience and develop expertise in managing a wide range of infectious diseases within a dynamic and supportive team environment.
