Job description

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Cafe Assistant to join our team in the "Glassroof Cafe" at Readers in Newport.

The ideal candidate will play an important role in ensuring our café operates smoothly and efficiently, providing excellent service to our customers. This position requires a proactive individual who is passionate about food and customer service, with a keen eye for detail, food hygiene and cleanliness.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Help serve customers promptly and courteously, taking orders and answering queries about menu items.
  • Serve and clear tables with friendly approach.
  • Maintain hygiene, cleanliness and organization including washing dishes and cookware, cleaning work surfaces, floors and equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the café area, including dining spaces and kitchen.
  • Handle deliveries and manage storage levels and dispose of waste, playing a vital role in supporting chefs and ensuring smooth efficient operation of the kitchen counter.
  • Manage stock levels, assisting with inventory checks and restocking supplies as needed.
  • Support the team in maintaining a positive atmosphere within the café, contributing to an enjoyable experience for all patrons.
  • Perform basic maths calculations for order processing and till operations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure efficient service during peak hours.
Skills / Requirements for this role
  • Strong understanding of food safety practices to ensure a hygienic environment. Food and Hygiene Certificates required.
  • Excellent time management skills to handle multiple tasks effectively during busy periods.
  • Basic maths skills for accurate order processing and cash handling.
  • Previous experience as kitchen porter / assistant is preferred; along with a willingness to learn and take further training.
  • A friendly disposition with strong communication skills to engage positively with customers and team members alike.

Part-time including Saturdays (16 hours per week), with occasional Evening Events
