The successful applicant will work within any buildings controlled by University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, carrying out carpentry repairs and maintaining the building fabric both internally and externally to Trust‑owned premises.
Responsibilities
- Deal with incidents such as damaged fire doors, lost keys (departmental, controlled drugs cupboards) and broken glass in doors and windows, ensuring health & safety compliance.
- Provide assistance to other craftsmen in the Estates Department.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPMs) on plant, equipment, building fabric and services in line with manufacturer recommendations and best practice.
- Perform repairs, construction and first/second fixing of timber fixtures and fittings, new work and alterations.
- Paint as required.
- Use access equipment for minor repairs to windows, roof lights, fencing and gates.
- Repair or replace locks, door closers, door furniture and automatic doors; cut keys where possible.
- Fit or replace laminates and Formica materials to fixtures and fittings.
- Repair all types of timber flooring, blinds, curtain tracks and related fixtures.
- Set up and dismantle trestles, hop‑ups, staging and ladders, provided training has been completed.
- Carry out defective item maintenance on the carpentry building fabric within target time frames.
- Perform refurbishment and/or new works as directed by the Team Leader.
- Advise the Team Leader of health and safety or maintenance issues that may affect building operations.
- Attend required training courses, including health & safety.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with clinicians, department heads, risk management and contractors.

Qualifications
- City and Guilds, NVQ Level 3 qualification in Carpentry & Joinery (preferable).
- Experience fitting, replacing and repairing door locks, cutting keys, maintaining automatic doors.
- Excellent painting skills.
- Experience of brick laying is beneficial.
- Experience of planned and reactive maintenance in large complex building environments.
