The position is Fixed Term for 12 months.

About Us

Wales Air Ambulance delivers advanced lifesaving medical care to people across Wales, 24/7. We are the only air ambulance charity based in and dedicated to the people of Wales and rely entirely on your charitable donations to raise 11.2 million every year to keep the helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road.

We have successfully grown our service over the last twenty three years from a single aircraft operating five days a week from a single base in South Wales to the four aircraft 24/7 service model that we have today.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Accountant will provide financial support and information to the wider charity and will be responsible for the general ledger.

This role will be integral to the success of the team in meeting its reporting requirements and ensuring the effectiveness of operational finance controls and processes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Accurate recording and reconciliation of all income and expenditure of the charity.
  • Reconcile donations across all partner platforms.
  • Reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
  • Produce month end reports.
  • Support the production of management accounts.
  • Assist with the development and production of a revised budgeting and forecasting process.
  • Provide support to budget managers on transactional accounting activities queries.
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Charity Commission and other regulatory requirements.
  • To ensure budget holders adhere to the Charity's procurement policy and procedures, providing support where required.
  • Support the year end audit process.
  • Assist with the production of quarterly VAT return and in the identification of partially disallowed inputs.
  • To provide support to the accounts payable / bookkeeping team where necessary.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the accountabilities of the post.
Personal Specification - Essential Criteria
  • Accounting Technician or part qualified accountant qualification.
  • Experience financial reconciliations and double entry bookkeeping is a pre-requisite for this role.
  • Excellent understanding of the regulatory framework.
  • Experience of exercising discretion and confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain accounting matters to non-financial colleagues and to negotiate with suppliers.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage and prioritise a variety of tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Able to produce clear, accurate and effective written documents and reports.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Confident in the use of internet, intranet, databases, and Microsoft packages, including Word and Outlook.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • A commitment to personal development and learning.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • Good understanding of the charity sector.
Desirable Criteria
  • Working knowledge of Xledger accounting software.
  • Experience of working in the charity sector.
  • Ability to communicate in Welsh.
