The Strasbourg Institute of Earth and Environment (ITES) (UMR7063) focuses on four disciplinary pillars: Hydrology, Geochemistry, Geology, and Geophysics. ITES comprises six teams involved in five thematic areas:

• Isotopic and Experimental Biogeochemistry
• Active Deformation and Dynamics of Landforms
• Geological Systems
• Geophysics and Process Imaging
• Seismology
• Transfers in Continental Hydrosystems

The PhD will be based at ITES in Strasbourg, supervised by Gianreto Manatschal, with collaborations planned with international universities (notably Bern, Switzerland), startups, and industry.

The project aims to investigate serpentinization-sourced hydrogen systems in the Grischun area, Switzerland, over three years. Key tasks include:

1. Mapping tectonic structures and mantle bodies using fieldwork and geophysical methods.
2. Recognizing and interpreting fault structures and litho-stratigraphic interfaces controlling deep fluid flow.
3. Collaborating with hydrodynamic modelers and geochemists to develop models testing the existence of serpentinite-sourced H2 systems.

Required candidate profile:

• Strong understanding of geological systems, preferably familiarity with Grisons geology.
• Ability to integrate geological, hydrological, and geochemical approaches, combining large-scale tectonics with hydromechanical modeling.

The candidate will be based at the Institut Terre et Environnement, University of Strasbourg/CNRS, with planned interactions with other universities and industry.
