The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Madrid seeks an interpreter/translator and intercultural mediator to facilitate access to rights and services for migrants at a reception center. You will bridge language barriers and support protection, legal aid, health and community teams.

Required Arabic and Spanish fluency; a secondary diploma is essential, a social sciences or humanities degree is a plus. Prior experience in multicultural international contexts is valued.

Job purpose: This role serves as a crucial link between IOM staff and beneficiaries, ensuring effective communication and understanding within a reception center. The purpose is to facilitate access to rights, services, and information for migrants by overcoming language and cultural barriers. By providing interpretation, translation, and intercultural mediation, the position supports the protection, legal assistance, community engagement, health, and center management teams. It aims to foster a respectful and inclusive environment, prevent misunderstandings, and ensure beneficiaries comprehend their situation and available support. The role contributes to the overall well-being and successful integration of migrants by enabling clear communication and mutual respect.

Responsibilities: Key responsibilities include facilitating effective communication between IOM staff and beneficiaries through oral interpretation and written translation. The role involves supporting various teams (protection, legal assistance, community engagement, health, center management) by ensuring mutual understanding. This includes interpreting and mediating in languages spoken by the migrant population, ensuring beneficiaries understand their rights, available services, procedures, and relevant information. The position also acts as an intercultural mediator, fostering understanding of cultural differences and promoting respectful coexistence. It involves informing staff about relevant cultural and social aspects, supporting interpretation with external service providers (health, social, legal, education), and communicating beneficiary needs and concerns. The role contributes to conflict resolution stemming from language or cultural barriers and participates in information and awareness activities. Confidentiality and data protection are paramount, alongside performing other related duties.

Education: A secondary school diploma is required. A degree in social sciences, humanities, or a relevant field is considered an asset. Fluency in Arabic and Spanish is mandatory.

Work experience: Progressive experience in a similar role is considered an asset. Experience working in international organizations, NGOs, or governmental institutions within a multicultural setting is advantageous. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is expected.
