IOM in Spain is seeking a Legal Assistant to provide essential legal guidance and support to beneficiaries of the reception resource, ensuring they are informed about their rights and options.
The role includes conducting initial assessments, managing case files, coordinating with protection, health, and psychosocial teams, and ensuring records are accurately maintained for monitoring and accountability.

This role serves as a Legal Assistant within the IOM, contributing to the organization's mission of managing migration effectively and supporting migrants. The purpose is to provide essential legal guidance and support to beneficiaries of the reception resource, ensuring they are informed about their rights and options within Spain. By conducting initial legal assessments, managing case files, and facilitating access to necessary services, the position directly contributes to the protection and well-being of migrants. The role also involves maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, and coordinating with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive and rights-based approach to migration management.
Provide individual and group legal guidance to beneficiaries on their rights, obligations, and administrative/legal options in Spain. Conduct initial legal assessments and follow-up interviews to identify specific needs, vulnerabilities, and protection risks. Ensure accurate completion of forms, files, and databases according to standard operating procedures and data protection requirements. Accurately record legal orientations, actions, and referrals confidentially. Prepare periodic reports, statistics, and case summaries for project monitoring and accountability. Inform beneficiaries about procedures related to documentation, public services, administrative processes, migration regularization, and international protection. Facilitate referrals to specialized legal services, free legal aid, and competent authorities. Coordinate closely with protection, case management, health, psychosocial support, and distribution teams for a comprehensive, person-centered response. Maintain effective coordination with national, regional, and local authorities, civil society, and other relevant actors. Accompany beneficiaries in administrative procedures when necessary. Identify and report protection incidents, emerging needs, and observed trends. Ensure compliance with confidentiality, data protection, rights-based approach, cultural sensitivity, gender, age, humanitarian principles, and IOM ethical standards. Participate in coordination meetings and training sessions.
A complete university degree or higher in Law from an accredited academic institution is required. Further certifications or specialized legal training related to migration law would be considered an advantage.
One year of relevant work experience is required. Experience working in a migration environment, communicating with governmental and diplomatic authorities, and working in a multicultural setting are considered advantageous.
Strong work ethic and commitment to humanitarian principles. Proficiency in standard software applications. Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. Strong organizational, facilitation, communication, writing, and presentation skills. Fluent Spanish and English required. Knowledge of other UN languages is a plus.
