IOM in Madrid seeks an interpreter/translator and intercultural mediator to facilitate communication between staff and migrants at a reception center.

Fluency in Arabic and Spanish is mandatory; knowledge of French and English is an asset. You will provide interpretation, translate documents, support protection, legal assistance and health teams, and help ensure migrants understand their rights and available services.

Job purpose

The purpose of this role is to facilitate effective communication and understanding between IOM staff and beneficiaries, particularly within a reception center. This involves providing interpretation and translation services in languages spoken by the migrant population, ensuring beneficiaries comprehend their rights, available services, and relevant information. The role also acts as an intercultural mediator, bridging cultural differences to foster respectful coexistence. By supporting communication with external service providers and relaying beneficiary needs, the position contributes to the smooth operation of the center and the well-being of migrants.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include facilitating effective communication between IOM staff and beneficiaries through interpretation and translation. The role supports various teams within the reception resource, including protection, legal assistance, community engagement, health, and centre management, by ensuring mutual understanding. This involves linguistic mediation in languages spoken by migrants, ensuring beneficiaries understand their rights and available services. The position also acts as an intercultural mediator, fostering understanding of cultural differences and promoting respectful coexistence. Additionally, it involves informing staff about relevant cultural and social aspects, supporting interpretation with external service providers, identifying and communicating beneficiary needs, and contributing to conflict resolution due to language or cultural barriers.

Education

A secondary school diploma is required. A degree in social sciences, humanities, or a relevant field is considered an asset.

Work experience

Progressive experience in a similar role is considered an asset. Experience working in international organisations, NGOs, or governmental institutions within a multicultural setting is advantageous.

Skills

Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Proficiency in standard software applications. Fluency in Arabic and Spanish is mandatory. Knowledge of French and English is an advantage. Knowledge of other UN languages is a plus.
