Overview

Systems Engineer/DevOps Eng, ESC Managed Operations — Berlin, Germany. AWS is introducing the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) to deliver high-availability AWS services (EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, Bedrock) exclusively for EU customers. This role involves building and leading operations and development teams, collaborating with global AWS teams, and influencing the evolution of AWS services and technology. The daily work includes collaborating with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance and efficiency of the ESC. Occasional on-call rotations are required to resolve incidents outside business hours.

Responsibilities
  • Launch ESC in 2025, working with global AWS teams and stakeholders to deliver scalable services with high availability for EU customers.
  • Collaborate with technology leaders to improve day-to-day operations, and contribute to enhancements in availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.
  • Participate in development and testing of scripts to improve workflows; provide constructive feedback on change management documents; address operational backlog collaboratively.
  • Act as an educator sharing insights on the European Sovereign Cloud with service teams; contribute to a culture of mutual knowledge sharing.
  • Work as part of a team to root-cause issues and ensure resilience and fault-tolerance; participate in 24x7 on-call responsibility as part of a team.

Eligibility & Requirements
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • National of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the ESC.
  • relocation support for successful applicants moving within the EU.
  • On-Call rota participation required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering with hardware, software, networking, and operating systems.
  • Experience scripting in Bash, Python, or Ruby.
  • Solid understanding of Linux and networking; able to troubleshoot and anticipate issues affecting performance, reliability, or availability of software systems.
  • Ability to lead creation/revision/improvement of SOPs and drive operational best practices.
  • Experience with monitoring frameworks (CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic or similar).
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers, cross-organizational collaboration, and leading strategic team efforts.
  • Experience supporting services in AWS or other cloud environments.
  • Experience operating 24x7 high-availability distributed applications and tuning performance and fleet utilization.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible or similar).
