About Us

SN Technology (SNT) is the technology division of Springer Nature. Our work touches upon all areas of the business; this role will support practitioners of Frontend Development across our departments.

There are about 700 of us across London, Berlin, Lisbon, Pune, New York, Madrid, Dordrecht, and Heidelberg. We work in collaborative, multi-disciplinary delivery teams, developing digital products and services that answer user problems and support business goals.

The work is interesting and meaningful.

Our culture is collaborative and friendly.

We encourage and support growth, both personal and professional.

This is a terrific opportunity for anyone who is keen to join a diverse team of creative people, who love to learn, who will embrace and develop our culture, who want to understand and help our customers, and help make SNT a place where people and ideas can thrive.

About the role

The Frontend Enablement team are responsible for supporting development teams and have a focus on frontend concerns including architecture and security, web performance, and data protection compliance. You’ll work closely with Frontend Developers from across different domains, marketing teams, and legal teams to help support the day-to-day operations of the business.

You will have a strong background in Frontend Development, complemented by a deep understanding of how technical decisions align with the wider organisational strategy. This role requires the ability to step back and see how systems and solutions fit together across multiple teams, identifying opportunities for improvement beyond the scope of a single product. You should be comfortable working at scale on complex, long-lived systems where security, robustness, and maintainability take priority over adopting the latest technology.

Your work will involve providing incremental improvements to existing applications as well as designing and building new features—within our Node.js applications, the browser, and tag management systems. Native JavaScript and Node.js expertise are essential, along with strong knowledge of methodologies, tooling, and best practices. You will leverage this knowledge not only to deliver robust solutions but also to guide and enable others, fostering collaboration and driving technical excellence across the organisation.

You will regularly be communicating and collaborating with multiple teams, seeking opportunities to help them provide the most value. You should be experienced working with people from different backgrounds and seniority levels and be comfortable having conversations around technology choices; being able to influence those discussions with knowledge of, and reference to, frontend best practices and ways of working.

The job is based in Berlin, and you will work remotely at times with colleagues in London.

About you:
  • You have hands‑on experience using JavaScript to build robust, scalable client‑side functionality, and Node.js to create and maintain backend applications and APIs, alongside working with tag management and deployment systems.
  • You have a keen interest in solving problems that make a positive impact for others.
  • You have experience working with cross‑functional teams and collaborating effectively.
  • You have strong communication skills and can explain technical concepts to non‑technical audiences, and vice versa.
  • You treat colleagues with respect, listen closely, and demonstrate compassion.
  • You work collaboratively and optimise for team success over individual success.
  • You are self‑starting, with strong organisational and decision‑making skills, and are happy defining your own work by seeking out areas where you can be useful to the organisation.
  • You are comfortable engaging with colleagues and teams both remotely and in person.
  • You have a good command of English; clear communication is key to collaboration in our day‑to‑day work.
What you will be doing:
Within 3 months:
  • Build strong working relationships with peers across the Frontend discipline and other areas of the organisation, gaining insight into collaboration, technology, and our ways of working.
  • Contribute to code and discussions in a way that reflects an understanding of the constraints, goals, and strategy of Frontend Enablement.
  • Learn and apply the techniques outlined in our Frontend Playbook.
  • Participate in code reviews within the Frontend Enablement team and review pull requests from other teams.
  • Gain an understanding of the architectural direction of the Frontend Enablement team.
  • With guidance from peers, contribute to cross‑discipline meetings and discussions to understand how we integrate and engage with the wider business.
  • Collaborate with peers to identify and undertake training to strengthen your skills in areas such as architecture, compliance, and performance.
Within 6 months:
  • Continue developing strong relationships with teams across the organisation, fostering collaboration and shared understanding.
  • Demonstrate effective communication in meetings and discussions to help others understand our goals and technologies.
  • Contribute to technology discussions, offering guidance and solutions that promote our preferred development practices.
  • Become familiar with our Consent Management Platform (CMP) architecture and our approach to data privacy and compliance.
  • Identify and complete tasks related to your areas of technical expertise with minimal supervision.
  • Share domain‑specific insights with the frontend leadership team to help solve cross‑domain problems.
  • Actively contribute to meetings and discussions with other disciplines and the wider business, speaking confidently about the technological landscape within your domain.
  • Contribute to Frontend Enablement playbooks and runbooks.
  • Begin identifying potential issues within team‑specific applications or implementations, clearly describe and demonstrate those issues to the wider team, and propose solutions that align with our preferred ways of working.
Within 12 months:
  • Continue promoting and applying principles that ensure robustness, accessibility, and maintainability in contributions and code reviews, aligning with guidance in our frontend playbooks.
  • Collaborate with peers across disciplines to influence architectural decisions and ensure technical solutions meet organisational goals for scalability, security, and long‑term maintainability.
  • Continue contributing to playbooks and runbooks specific to the Frontend Enablement team.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of technology across the wider organisation.
  • Advocate and drive development practices that improve the user experience for Frontend Enablement products.
  • Be a trusted source of advice for solving problems, supporting developers and colleagues from less technical backgrounds with constructive feedback.
  • Help others identify their learning needs through informal conversations or structured approaches, enabling developers to build skills for delivering accessible, robust, performant, and secure products.
  • Showcase best practices for frontend architecture.
  • Identify areas of the Frontend Enablement codebases for improvement to mitigate future issues.
