Program Overview

Helmholtz Munich invites outstanding early-career researchers (f/m/x) to apply for the Health AI Fellows (HAIF) Program, a unique postdoctoral fellowship designed to provide exceptional independence and resources for advancing computational biomedicine and health‑related AI.

As a HAIF Fellow at our Computational Health Center (CHC), you will develop and lead an independent research program at the interface of computation, biomedicine, and AI. You will have the freedom to conceive and pursue innovative research directions, leveraging CHC’s computational infrastructure, scientific platforms, and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities
  • Design and execute an independent research project advancing computational, statistical, or AI‑driven approaches to health and disease
  • Collaborate independently with computational, biological, or clinical partners within Munich and internationally
  • Contribute to the interdisciplinary research culture at Helmholtz Munich
  • Publish high‑impact publications
  • Develop software and IP with translational potential for clinical or commercial application
Qualifications
  • PhD (completed or near completion) in computational sciences, computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, statistics, or related quantitative fields
  • Strong interest in applying computational methods to biomedical or health‑related problems
  • Demonstrated creativity, independence, and scientific excellence
  • Experience working with large‑scale data, modeling, or AI/ML methods is an advantage

If you fulfill all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E 13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public‑Sector Employees (TVöD). The position has an (initial) fixed term of 2 years but may be extended under certain circumstances.

Mentor Selection Requirement

As part of your application, please select two CHC Principal Investigators whom you propose as your primary mentors for the fellowship. Alternatively, applicants may select one CHC PI and one external mentor (e.g., from university, or industry/start‑up). Please include a brief justification for your mentor choices in your application materials.
