City Experiences is seeking a Deckhand for our City Cruises operation in Toronto.
*Please note, this is a seasonal/contract position*

About the Opportunity:
The Deckhand is responsible for maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the vessels. The successful candidate will take a customer-centric approach to ensure guest comfort and safety while underway and assist with docking and undocking. The Deckhand will provide preventative, corrective, emergency, cosmetic, and routine maintenance to all associated equipment, piers, and vessels. This position will include other general maintenance duties such as painting, repairing, renovating, and remodeling on and off the vessels.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide amazing hospitality to guests and coworkers as prescribed in our RESPECT Service System.
- Follow safety procedures to ensure the protection of passengers and vessel.
- Participate in routine safety drills to prepare for major incidents.
- Handle lines to moor vessels to pier.
- Stand watch in ships' bows, sterns, or bridge wings to look for obstructions in a ship’s path or to locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses.
- Assist Captain and supervisory personnel in maintaining vessel equipment and systems such as HVAC, engine, and technical equipment.
- Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all common areas. Sweep, mop, and wash down decks, exterior and interior to remove dirt and debris, using brooms, mops, brushes, and hoses. Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
- Load or unload materials from vessels; gather and remove trash from the vessel.
- Set up and break down dining room and service stations as prescribed; this requires movement of dining cabin furniture.
- Help the Restaurant Manager with additional hospitality duties as requested.
- Be prepared to begin work at scheduled time.
- Willingness to work extended shifts as business needs dictate.
- Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards.
- Maintenance and repair of vessel systems, and troubleshooting as needed, i.e., potable water systems, sewage systems (associated pumps/piping), shore power transfer to generators, steering gear systems, bilge pump/alarms, sump pumps, galley grey water piping systems.
- Maintenance and repair of building structures, i.e., sanding, painting, varnishing, lighting, plumbing, light carpentry work (door frame/wall repair).
- Assist with the startup and completion of projects.
- Complete maintenance projects and repair work within the timeframe assigned, and inform management of all progress, delays, and/or challenges.
- Communicate effectively with all team members and management to ensure projects are completed in a timely, cost-effective manner.
- Must always use proper safety equipment.
- Other duties as assigned by the Captain, Mate, Restaurant Manager on duty, Port Captain, or Associate Director, Marine Operations.
Requirements & Qualifications:
- O.S.S.D. or equivalent as recognized by the Ministry of Education
- Marine experience an asset
- First Aid Certification an asset
- Energetic and enthusiastic personality essential
- Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to guests and coworkers
- Must possess a service orientation – actively looking for ways to help others
- Will work for extended periods without sitting
- Required to lift furniture and other heavy items such as provisions up and down stairs. Required to throw mooring lines from ship to pier
- Ability to analyze and solve problems. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities/tasks
- WHIMIS (training provided)
- Working knowledge of Lock Out Tag Out Systems
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop, wipe, push, pull, move or lift up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms)
- Will be required to be available for work on all major holidays and weekends
- If required, wear assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (i.e., non-slip shoes, gloves, weather-appropriate dress attire, sun protection, life jackets)
