Job description
About Float

Float is on a mission to simplify finance for Canadian businesses, empowering them to eliminate complexity and unlock new opportunities. Through our innovative platform, Float enables businesses to streamline financial operations and optimize cash flow, so they can focus on what matters most: growth.

As one of Canada’s fastest growing companies and top-rated startups in 2024 and 2023, Float is customer-obsessed, passionate and entrepreneurial, with a team that includes leaders from Uber, Shopify, Top Hat, TouchBistro, and Ada.

At Float, everyone is an owner, bringing their unique perspective to our team and product. Your voice is important, and we take having a culture based on feedback seriously. We openly share our thoughts and differing opinions so we can continue to improve. We do our best to keep our decision-making decentralized so that all team members feel ownership in our success.

Our Product

Float is Canada's complete business finance platform, combining modern financial services and software to help businesses spend, save, and grow. Trusted by 5000+ Canadian companies, Float provides high-limit corporate cards, automated expense management, next-day bill payments, high-yield accounts and fast, friendly support—all built in Canada, for Canada. Float is backed by world-class venture and fintech investors, including Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives and OMERS Ventures, partners behind our $70 million Series B raise.

Our team is a collection of ambitious, collaborative and mission-driven people from all walks of life but with one goal: helping Canadian companies not just survive but thrive. And we’re looking for bold innovators to help shape the future of business finance in Canada.

About the Role

This role sits within Float’s Financial Products (FinProd) group, where we design and operate backend systems that move money and manage financial state. These systems power core capabilities such as bill pay and other financial workflows, where correctness, reliability, and trust are non-negotiable.

We are hiring across multiple levels for this role. Our interview process is designed to assess candidates objectively based on impact, judgment, and learning velocity, and we will level accordingly. As Float continues to grow, this team offers meaningful opportunities to take on increasing scope, ownership, and technical leadership over time.

This role is well-suited for engineers who enjoy systems thinking, complex domains, and treating software development as a craft rather than just shipping CRUD.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Design and maintain backend systems that support money movement and financial workflows.
  • Model complex data and state transitions with a strong focus on correctness and invariants.
  • Build and evolve distributed systems, including asynchronous workflows, retries, and failure handling.
  • Anticipate edge cases and scale challenges before they become production issues.
  • Apply disciplined testing and validation practices for high-blast-radius changes.
  • Partner with Product, Frontend, and Platform teams to deliver reliable customer outcomes.
  • Take ownership of systems in production, including reliability and post-incident learning.
What Success Looks Like (6–12 Months)
  • You own or meaningfully contribute to critical backend domains with high reliability and trust.
  • Financial workflows you work on scale cleanly as usage grows.
  • You surface and address edge cases early, reducing incidents and rework.
  • Teammates trust your judgment on complex system design and correctness.
  • Your work raises the quality bar for backend engineering at Float.
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience building backend systems beyond basic CRUD patterns.
  • Comfort reasoning about data flow, state transitions, and distributed system trade-offs.
  • Solid database fundamentals, including transactional integrity and performance at scale.
  • An ownership mindset for systems running in production.
  • Curiosity and adaptability — language or framework experience matters less than how you think.
  • Bonus: exposure to financial systems, ledgering, payments, or high-scale transactional platforms.
Our Hiring Philosophy
  • Values > Aptitude > Skills
  • Slope > Intercept
  • Collective Bar Raising

We hire for character, curiosity, and learning velocity before credentials. Titles matter less than impact, and every hire is expected to raise the bar for Float as a whole.

Why You Should Join
  • Work at one of Canada's fastest-growing fintech companies
  • Make a real impact in a high-autonomy, high-growth role
  • Collaborate with an ambitious and supportive team
  • Competitive compensation, equity options, and benefits
  • Hybrid work model – we are based in Toronto with in-office days for connection and collaboration
  • Enjoy catered team lunches every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
  • Bring your pup to our dog-friendly office
  • Thrive in a high-trust, high-performance culture where your work truly matters
