SENIOR EMBEDDED SYSTEMS ENGINEER
THE OPPORTUNITY

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer (Hardware & Firmware) to join Harding Technologies based in Edmonton, Alberta. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Embedded Systems Engineer will work hands‑on across embedded hardware design and supporting firmware, contributing to the development of reliable, safety‑critical products used in fire and security systems.

The Senior Embedded Systems Engineer will collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams to design, test, and integrate embedded solutions, from schematics and PCB design through to validation, test automation, and system integration, while maintaining a strong focus on reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards (UL, NFPA, ULC, CE). This is an opportunity for an experienced embedded engineer who enjoys building real products, solving practical problems, and seeing designs through to production.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design and develop embedded hardware solutions for fire and security systems, including schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Contribute to embedded firmware development and system‑level integration, including support for test fixtures, automation, and validation activities.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure seamless hardware, firmware, and software integration throughout product development.
  • Prototype, test, debug, and validate designs to ensure reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support certification and compliance activities in accordance with industry standards such as UL, ULC, NFPA, FM, and CE.
  • Produce clear and accurate technical documentation, including design files, test reports, and validation records.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives across product development and manufacturing.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Controls or a related field.Master's degree an asset.
  • 5+ years in embedded circuit design, particularly for safety‑critical systems (fire detection, security, or emergency response).
  • Eligible for registration with APEGA.
KEY COMPETENCIES
  • Strong proficiency with PCB design tools such as Altium, OrCAD, or Eagle.
  • Proven experience designing and troubleshooting analog and digital electronic circuits.
  • Experience designing embedded systems from the circuit level through system integration.
  • Hands‑on experience with embedded microcontrollers (e.g., ARM, PIC) and communication protocols (e.g., I²C, SPI, RS-485, CAN).
  • Practical exposure to embedded firmware development, including state machines, RTOS‑based systems, or embedded Linux environments.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturability, reliability, and test.
  • Working knowledge of safety and regulatory standards, including UL, NFPA, ULC, and CE.
  • Familiarity with wireless communication technologies (e.g., Wi‑Fi, Zigbee, cellular) is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and documentation skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
