Job summary

The Salvation Army in Canada is seeking a full-time Shelter Support Worker to ensure a secure environment for residents across our facilities. The role involves coordinating admissions, monitoring safety, and assisting with daily operations such as meals and housekeeping, while maintaining confidentiality and a trauma-informed approach.

Applicants should have a high school diploma with related certifications (Food Safe, First Aid, CPR) and at least one year of relevant experience.

Qualifications

• Completion of High School diploma plus specialized coursework or formal post-secondary certificate.
• Certification in Food Safe, First Aid and CPR.
• At least one year of related experience is preferred.
• Knowledge and compassion for working with people experiencing homelessness, addictions, mental health and trauma.
• Basic computer skills; willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Monitor client activity and maintain a calm, supportive presence to ensure safety and adherence to facility guidelines.
• Conduct regular room checks, property rounds, and inspections.
• Assist with client admissions, including orientation and documentation.
• Maintain detailed records and logs using designated systems (HIFIS, SMIS).
• Assist with medication storage and administration per policy.
• Support daily operations including meal service and housekeeping.
• Coordinate and provide crisis support using de-escalation techniques and emergency protocols as needed.
