Position Summary

We are seeking a Registered Practical Nurse from a valid educational institution to join our multidisciplinary team for a temporary contract position of up to 6 months. The successful candidate will provide nursing services to clients of the Lakehead Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic to promote health, prevent illness and disease and provide support and treatment.

About the Clinic

The Lakehead Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic (LNPLC) is a primary care clinic focused on providing high-quality, patient-centered healthcare in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Our team of NPs, RN, RPNs, dietitian, social workers, pharmacist, work collaboratively to deliver comprehensive care to individuals in the Thunder Bay area.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform nursing assessments and interventions for the patients of our clinic within the registered practical nurses’ scope of practice.
  • Administer medication(s) and immunizations as ordered by a provider.
  • Triage patient appointment calls and assist with reception.
  • Monitor diabetic patients with respect to blood sugar levels, diet, foot care and weight.
  • Dressing changes, infection control, health teaching, monitoring nutritional intake, taking vital signs, and conducting specimen collections.
  • Monitor wound care and dressing changes for clinic patients; consulting with providers.
  • Participate in chart reviews and discussion of problem cases.
  • Operate and/or monitor medical apparatus/equipment; including oxygen equipment.
  • Monitor immunization fridge temperatures.
  • Maintain drug cupboards, restock clinical rooms, prepare exam rooms for clients, inventory equipment, and ensure equipment is maintained.
  • Assist patients with appropriate referrals when and if necessary.
  • Assist the Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurse as needed.
  • Maintain a level of care that meets cultural, holistic and ethical standards based on the College of Nurses standards.
  • Adhere to the confidentiality policy, relevant legislation and all other policies and procedures of the Lakehead Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic.
Education, Qualifications and Skills
  • Registered Practical Nurse Diploma from a valid educational institution.
  • Two (2) years of experience as clinical RPN.
  • Diabetes Educator, or Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) would be an asset.
  • Foot Care or other specialized Certification would be an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, problem solving, critical thinking and leadership skills.
  • Experience with electronic documentation and record keeping.
  • Current BCLS.
Additional Job Requirements
  • Must possess a Class “G” Driver’s License and have access to a personal vehicle.
  • Satisfactory criminal records search including vulnerable sector screening.
  • Up to date on vaccinations (including MMR and Covid) – must provide immunizations and Covid vaccination records.
