Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the primary role of the Project Superintendent is to ensure that the construction of the project progresses according to plan and is completed to standards.

The Project Superintendent is to administer, direct and coordinate the activities of the mine development, construction and maintenance crews, and to coordinate and request the necessary equipment, materials, and supplies needed for the project.

The Project Superintendent plays a critical role in all of Redpath’s activities within a project with direct responsibility for health and safety, contract performance and client relations.

Responsibilities
  • Accountable for the performance of a project, including all aspects of safety, financial, schedule and quality performance
  • Ensure that the safety program and all safety procedures are adhered to
  • Accountable for the overview, logistics, methodology and resourcing of a new project
  • Project superintendent is the primary contact with the client
  • Responsible for personnel selection and development, including succession planning
  • Identifies and trains back-up superintendent and future leaders. Coaching and mentoring a major accountability
  • Follow proper procedure to ensure safety and to control equipment damage
  • Participate in development of critical task procedures
  • Participate in incident/accident investigations and reporting
  • Ensure that the disciplinary action procedures that are established are followed on project crews
  • Ensure that mining activities are completed according to “Quality Plan” and “Best Practices”
  • Suggest changes to plans and processes to the Area Manager that will improve the efficiency or quality of the project
  • Recommend the hiring or termination of direct mining personnel to the Area Manager
  • Determine the tasks to be accomplished on a daily basis and assign these to the appropriate crews
  • Supervise directly the daily activities of the mining crews
  • Prepare Daily Reports for the Area Manager as directed
  • Review time reports, approve and cost code the hours of the mining crews
  • Requisition needed equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Arrange for assets and resources to be available when needed
  • Coordinate with support departments to ensure that needs are met
  • Enforce the project site operating and employee policies
  • Review progress on an ongoing basis
  • With the Area Manager, coordinate the activities of all subcontractors
  • Provide support to the project management team as required

  • Responsible for the use and maintenance of all safety equipment, i.e. Lanyards, warning signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation
  • Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to effectively use an MSDS sheet.
Education/Certification
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ontario Hard Rock Underground Common Core – Full Basic (or other provincial/country equivalent)
  • Ontario Basic Underground Hard Rock Front Line Supervisor – Common Core (or other provincial/country equivalent)
  • Train the Trainer Certification

  • Required: 10 years, including 4 years in supervisory position

  • Detailed knowledge of established mining methods and operating practices
  • General knowledge of the integration of the mining, milling, and maintenance functions
  • Working knowledge of the explosives used in mining
  • Good working knowledge with MS Office Suite especially in Excel and Word.
  • Complete knowledge of the underground mining environment
  • Knowledge of various underground mining methods
  • Solid safety performance at the personal and professional level
  • The use of analytical and observational skills which demonstrate an ability to organize and control project activities. Ability to accurately interpret blueprint and drawings.
  • Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform his duties in a safe and efficient manner
