PROJECT MANAGER (BAND LEVEL 8)

Hibernia and Hebron Research & Development Initiative

Research Initiatives and Services (RIS)

Contractual Position to March 31, 2028; Possibility of Extension)

The University will consider applications from qualified permanent staff who may be interested in a secondment, subject to departmental approval

This position is funded through an external grant

OVERVIEW

The Hibernia and Hebron R&D initiative encompasses a new portfolio of projects in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Additive Manufacturing, Sustainability, and Subsurface Prediction and is administered by Research Initiatives & Services (RIS). One project, the Atlantic Canada BioChar project, aims to develop waste biomass-based adsorbents (biochar) to capture carbon from point sources (engine stacks, vents, etc.) and then use the carbon-loaded biochars to replace non-renewable components in construction materials. The strategy is a cradle-to-cradle approach in greenhouse gas management, where the waste from one industry is used to treat another's waste and then stored in a useful, carbon-fixed product. The Project Manager will help ensure that the project meets projected milestones in a timely manner within the allocated budget, and that internal and external reporting requirements are met. To do so, the successful applicant will work closely with the Co-Investigators and project team, RIS, Technical Services, Facilities Management and other support units, Energy Research & Innovation (ERI), the project Advisory Committee, industry partners, and vendors.

DUTIES

Working directly with the Co-Principal Investigators (PIs) and the Senior Project Manager, Hibernia and Hebron R&D initiative, the Project Manager will help ensure that the projects are executed on time and on budget. Duties include facilitating the purchase of several pieces of equipment; ensuring that the labs are prepared to receive the equipment, and that the equipment is fully operational; coordinating and using project resources effectively to ensure project deadlines and commitments are met to the satisfaction of Energy Research and Innovation, internal and external stakeholders; applying and following best practices and policies employed by the University; ensuring team members are engaged throughout the duration of the project; coordinating and tracking the project plan implementation and activity schedule to meet milestones and completion deadlines; helping to ensure the projects are completed on time and on budget; identifying project risks and implementing mitigation strategies following consultation with the PIs, RIS staff, and / or the Advisory Committee as appropriate; budgeting and monitoring project expenditures against budget; maintaining effective communications with RIS, ERI, and all partners; coordinating reports and budget updates to various stakeholders; and performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (2-3 years) in project management or coordination, including budgeting and monitoring expenses against budget, preferably in a university or industrial R&D environment; experience in selection, procurement, installation, and maintenance of scientific equipment; completion of a master’s degree in a related science or engineering discipline is required; or an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including verbal and written communication, and the ability to prioritize work are essential, as is laboratory experience. Experience setting up or managing a research laboratory, experience in the oil and gas industry, and / or collaborative work with funding agencies and partner organizations would be assets.
