About the Position

The Primary Care Registered Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team at the University of Toronto Student Health and Wellness Centre.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Clinical Operations, the Primary Care RN provides exceptional, holistic, culturally safe nursing care in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures while upholding the University of Toronto Health and Wellness’ Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of the nursing process as well as sound critical thinking, problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities. The RN will be skilled at performing physical and mental health assessments on students presenting to Health & Wellness, identify and prioritise concerns, and implement and evaluate a plan of care in collaboration with the inter‑professional team.

The Primary Care RN will perform comprehensive and focused health assessments including past health history, medication reconciliation, physical examination, mental health evaluation; risk screening to determine emergent concerns, or safety risks; collaborate with Primary Care Physicians and other team members; participate in case conferences; lead and participate in health promotion and screening programs; lead drafting and revising medical directives and policies; provide health teaching; maintain clinic operations such as vaccine inventory; perform minor procedures; complete TB testing; work under medical directives; respond to emergency codes; document in accordance with CNO and institutional requirements; assist physicians with follow‑up on lab and imaging reports.

Your Responsibilities
  • Assess the physical and mental condition of patients to determine medical needs
  • Determine if there is a life‑threatening illness, risk of self‑harm or harm to others and independently apply appropriate interventions
  • Provide detailed information to physicians regarding patient needs and background history as required
  • Provide ongoing health counselling to patients
  • Update and maintain patient records
  • Exercise extreme care to prevent serious physical or emotional injury or harm
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required; current registration, in good standing with no practice restrictions, as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum five years of clinical practice experience in a primary health setting.
  • Clinical practice experience in providing mental health nursing care.
  • Excellent decision‑making, problem‑solving, critical thinking, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work professionally and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Prioritises and manages time effectively and is flexible in an active work environment.
  • Good judgement, sensitivity, flexibility and resourcefulness.
  • Demonstrates cultural awareness; respectful of cultural diversity.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of primary health care, mental health and the impacts of the social determinants of health for students.
  • Understanding of evidence‑based practice within the health care field.
  • Application of the College of Nurses Standards of Practice (ethics, confidentiality, documentation).
  • Understanding and implementation of PHIPA and PIPEDA.
  • Computer skills required (EMR, Word, Excel, Outlook).

Note: This is a 6‑month term position; regular office hours 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.; some evenings to 6 p.m. and occasional overtime as needed. Position may be extended.
