Job description

Personal Support Worker - Brantford, ON - CAD$54.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We're seeking a compassionate male caregiver to provide companionship for a 58-year-old gentleman residing in long-term care in Branford. He moved to the facility in July following an aneurysm and strokes, which have affected his mobility and cognitive function. While all his medical, personal care, and daily living needs are met by the facility staff, he would greatly benefit from regular social interaction and companionship beyond family visits.

He uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility and moves at his own pace—patience is essential as rushing can cause frustration. He may occasionally use strong language when upset, but he is not physically aggressive. He enjoys quiet activities like watching movies, eating meals in his room, and short walks outside when weather permits. He sleeps much of the day but responds well to gentle engagement and benefits from memory prompts and redirection.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide friendly companionship and social engagement during visits

  • Watch movies together in his room

  • Assist with short walks down the hallway or outside to the garden area

  • Offer gentle encouragement for participation in activities

  • Provide memory prompts and calm redirection as needed

  • Respect his pace and independence while offering support

What We're Looking For:

  • Male caregiver preferred to establish a buddy-like relationship

  • PSW certification required

  • Experience working with individuals who have experienced stroke or brain injury

  • Comfortable working in long-term care settings

  • Patient, calm demeanor with ability to handle occasional verbal frustration

  • Experience with mobility devices (walkers, wheelchairs)

  • Ability to provide cognitive support through gentle prompts and redirection

  • Reliable, consistent, and brings positive energy

  • Must be willing to provide documentation to the long-term care facility

Schedule:

Biweekly visits (every other week), approximately 2 hours per visit, preferably on Wednesdays around noon. Schedule may be adjusted based on facility physiotherapy appointments. This is a flexible arrangement with potential to increase frequency if the match works well. Initial commitment of three months with ongoing evaluation.

Additional Considerations

You’ll be supporting a 58-year-old gentleman residing in long-term care in Brantford following an aneurysm and multiple strokes. He uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility and benefits from memory prompts and gentle redirection due to cognitive changes. While all his personal care, meals, and medical needs are met by the facility, he needs companionship and social engagement. He can be slow-moving and may become frustrated if rushed, occasionally expressing this verbally, though he is not physically aggressive. He responds better to male caregivers who can establish a buddy-like rapport rather than a clinical relationship.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide friendly companionship during 2-hour visits

  • Watch movies together in his room

  • Encourage and assist with walks down the hallway or outside to the garden

  • Engage in conversation and provide social stimulation

  • Use patience and calm redirection when needed

  • Coordinate with long-term care facility staff as required

What We're Looking For:

  • Male caregiver strongly preferred

  • PSW certification required

  • Experience working with stroke survivors and cognitive impairment

  • Comfortable working in long-term care settings

  • Patient, calm demeanor with ability to remain positive when faced with verbal frustration

  • Reliable and consistent presence

  • Ability to build genuine friendship-style connections

  • Experience with mobility devices (walkers, wheelchairs)

Schedule:

Biweekly visits (every other week), 2 hours per visit, preferably Wednesdays around noon. Schedule flexibility may be needed to accommodate facility physiotherapy sessions. This is an ongoing companionship role with potential to increase frequency based on fit and family needs.
