Job description

Personal Support Worker - Blue Mountains, Collingwood, ON - CAD$243.00/week

Description

About the Client:

We are seeking a compassionate and reliable caregiver for an 85-year-old woman who recently experienced a cardiac episode requiring hospitalization. She has been living independently until late April 2026, when she had a heart-related health event that resulted in a week-and-a-half hospital stay. She is now recovering in her son's home on the main level, having transitioned from her previous apartment above the garage.

She has early-stage memory challenges consistent with age-related cognitive changes, though her long-term memory remains strong. She recently spent a month in Mexico with family without issues and has historically been very active—managing her own meals, navigating stairs multiple times daily, and maintaining her independence. Her short-term memory can be affected by new environments, typically requiring 3-4 days to adjust and regain familiarity and confidence.

She lost some strength and mobility during her hospital stay and is currently using a walker. She has an on-suite bathroom in her main-level bedroom and wears a personal emergency response device around her neck. A PSW from Ontario Health at Home provides bathing assistance. She is on a medication schedule managed by family in the morning and evening. She is cognitively engaged, remembers significant family events (including an expected great-grandchild in August 2026), and enjoys social interaction and companionship.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide attentive companionship and supervision during daytime hours
  • Prepare and assist with lunch
  • Encourage mobility and safe use of walker
  • Monitor overall well-being and report any changes in condition or behavior
  • Engage in meaningful conversation and activities to support cognitive stimulation
  • Ensure safety and comfort throughout the visit
  • Complete visit reports documenting observations and activities
  • Support the client's adjustment to her new living environment

What We're Looking For:

  • A warm, patient caregiver who understands the importance of consistency and building trust
  • Someone who can recognize subtle changes in mood, behavior, or physical condition
  • Strong communication skills to keep family informed
  • Reliable and punctual with a flexible, compassionate approach
  • Experience supporting seniors with memory challenges and post-hospitalization recovery
  • Ability to work independently while being part of a family care team
  • Understanding that the client is regaining strength and confidence after a significant health event

Schedule:

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 12 PM to 3 PM (3-4 hours per day). The family manages morning and evening care, with teenagers arriving home by mid-afternoon. This schedule allows family members to fulfill work commitments while ensuring continuous supervision during the client's recovery period.
