Job summary

Public Health Ontario is seeking a Laboratory Attendant 2 to provide technical services in their environmental laboratory. Laboratory Attendant 2

Location: PHO Corporate Office & Toronto Laboratory, 661 University Avenue, Toronto, ON

Department: Front End Processing

The Role:

Please note this posting is for 2 positions.

To provide technical laboratory services to the environmental laboratory and support laboratory operations for testing specimens submitted to PHO Laboratories.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Log, sort, and label all specimens submitted for testing/examination.
  2. Transport samples to testing laboratories as required.
  3. Handle, prepare, and process medical samples (e.g., culture media, reagents) for microorganism identification, testing up to result interpretation (e.g., setup of cultures, staining, extraction, loading analyzers).
  4. Handle, prepare, process, and enter water sample data results.
  5. Use automated equipment or manual methods to prepare and aliquot human samples for testing.
  6. Utilize PHO Laboratory Information System to prepare worksheets or enter data, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  7. Prepare, load, and unload laboratory analyzers.
  8. Perform inventory management, including ordering, unpacking, and storing laboratory supplies.
  9. File, store, and discard laboratory samples.
  10. Clean and maintain laboratory equipment; disinfect work areas.
  11. Maintain laboratory stock supplies.
  12. Assist with quality control setup and stock culture maintenance.
  13. Answer telephone inquiries and resolve sample-related issues (e.g., incomplete information, mismatched tests, leaking samples).
  14. Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, laboratory information systems, MS Office (Word, Excel).
  • Proficient in working with automated and computer-driven laboratory equipment.
Education and Experience
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician from a recognized community college or relevant training and experience.
Attributes and Competencies
  • Strong oral communication skills for interacting with team members and external clients (e.g., physicians).
  • Effective written communication skills for record-keeping.

Duration: Contract (Fixed Term), 9 months

Hours of Work: Full time, 36.25 hours/week

Compensation Group: Ontario Public Service Employees Union

Salary: $28.62 - $32.24
