Laboratory Attendant 2

Location: PHO Corporate Office & Toronto Laboratory, 661 University Avenue, Toronto, ON

Department: Specimen Handling

The Role:

To provide technical laboratory services to the environmental laboratory and support laboratory operations for testing specimens submitted to PHO Laboratories.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Log, sort, label all specimens submitted for testing/examination.
  2. Transport samples to testing laboratories as required.
  3. Handle, prepare, and process medical samples (e.g., culture media and reagents) for microorganism identification, including setup of cultures, staining, extraction, and loading analyzers.
  4. Handle, prepare, process, and enter water sample data results.
  5. Use automated or manual methods to prepare and aliquot human samples for testing.
  6. Utilize PHO Laboratory Information System for worksheet preparation and data entry, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  7. Prepare, load, and unload laboratory analyzers.
  8. Manage inventory by ordering, unpacking, and storing laboratory supplies.
  9. File, store, and discard laboratory samples appropriately.
  10. Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and work areas.
  11. Maintain laboratory stock supplies.
  12. Assist with quality control setup and stock culture maintenance.
  13. Respond to sample-related inquiries and resolve issues (e.g., incomplete information, mismatched tests, leaking samples).
  14. Perform other duties or projects as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems, MS Office (Word, Excel).
  • Proficient in working with automated and computer-driven equipment.

Education and Experience:

  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician from a recognized community college or relevant training and experience.

Attributes and Competencies:

  • Effective oral communication skills for exchanging information with team members and external clients.
  • Strong written communication skills for recording information accurately.

Duration: Contract (Fixed Term), 3 months

Hours of Work: Full time, 36.25 hours/week

Compensation Group: Ontario Public Service Employees Union

Salary: $28.62 - $32.24 per hour
