John Ross & Sons is currently seeking a Yard Supervisor to join our team in Goodwood, Nova Scotia. As the largest scrap metal recycling facility in Atlantic Canada, we seek a hard‑working and dedicated critical thinker who keeps safety top of mind to join our team.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the yard employees and ensuring operations are running efficiently. Reporting directly to the Site Owner and Operations Manager, the ideal candidate will be an exceptional leader with critical thinking and will not be afraid to get their hands dirty by jumping in and helping where and when needed. Experience working with forklifts, bobcats, and other production related equipment is required.

Hours of Work

Full‑time. Monday to Friday, 7 am–5:30 pm; Saturday 7 am–12 pm.

Essential Job Functions
  • Work with the Owner and Operations Manager to ensure proper staffing and training is in place to support ongoing operations of the organization.
  • Responsible for assessing the day‑to‑day needs of the yard/site employees and communicating with dispatch.
  • Assign resources; employees, equipment and supplies to increase efficiency and productivity.
  • Provide leadership and direction to improve safety and ensure safe work practices are implemented to address risks.
  • Ensure compliance of all employees with safety requirements, instructions, and best work practices.
  • Maintain recycling yard and site organization.
  • Train and direct employees in proper use of site equipment (forklift, bobcat, excavator).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • Three plus years of experience in staff management, development, and planning.
  • Three plus years of experience in the scrap metal industry is an asset.
  • Experience operating forklifts, bobcats, and other heavy equipment is required.
  • Must have excellent problem‑solving skills with the ability to find suitable solutions for productivity, environmental, safety‑related, and employment issues.
  • Must have effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
