Job summary

A local government organization is looking for an Inclusion Leader for its Summer Day Camp program in Ontario. You will work alongside Day Camp Leaders to provide tailored support for children and youth with special needs, ensuring their full participation in various camp activities. Position Description

As a member of Norfolk County’s Summer Day Camp team, the Inclusion Leader works alongside Day Camp Leaders to provide recreational leadership and facilitation across camp programs. In addition to supporting the team, the Inclusion Leader works independently to provide individualized support and adaptations to children and youth with special needs, ensuring their full participation in camp activities.

Under the guidance of the Recreation Coordinator(s) and Regional Camp Coordinator(s), the Inclusion Leader collaborates with the onsite Day Camp Coordinator and Day Camp Leaders to deliver safe, inclusive, and high-quality camp experiences following the HIGH FIVE® model.

  • Develop and implement individualized daily/weekly support plans for assigned participants.
  • Facilitate a variety of day camp activities including sports, games, crafts, swimming, and special events, ensuring accessibility and inclusion for all participants.
  • Provide personal care as required (feeding, toileting, clothing changes) with dignity and safety.
  • Provide participants with coaching to complete select Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as meal preparation, encouraging water intake, application of sunscreen and dressing.
  • Support participants with mobility and engagement in camp activities as needed, promoting independence and inclusion.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies and intervene safely during challenging behaviours.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain program equipment and supplies; assist with setup and cleanup of activities and events.
  • Serve as a liaison with parents/guardians, reinforcing Norfolk County’s diversity, inclusion, and customer service policies.
  • Participate in orientation, training, and ongoing professional development throughout the summer.
  • Maintain positive and collaborative relationships with staff, volunteers, and participants.
  • Follow all Norfolk County policies, procedures, and health and safety regulations.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • College/University student with studies in Recreation, Outdoor Leadership Education, Child and Youth Worker, Nursing, Social Services area or equivalent - minimum 1 year of post‑secondary education is required.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (if hired, must be obtained no later than camp start date).
  • HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development (if hired, must be obtained not later than camp start date).
  • Experience working with children, youth, or individuals with special needs.
  • Experience working with children; knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music and/or games; experience working with adults and seniors considered an asset.
  • Experience in a leadership capacity is required i.e. student council member, leadership role on youth council.
  • Ability to prepare, facilitate and adapt program plans and activities on a daily basis.
  • Excellent customer service and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the recreation programs offered by Norfolk County.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision, following all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
  • Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet).
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Note

Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays.

Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.

At time of application must be enrolled in a post‑secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.

Applicants must submit a criminal record check (dated within the last 3 months) from their local police service for approval prior to commencing employment.

Duration

The duration of this contract will be approximately 3 months. Applicants are expected to fulfill the entire contract period commencing May 23, 2026, to September 4, 2026. Training will occur in June, and camp begins July 2, 2026, schedules of up to 40 hours per week will not commence until July.
