Job summary

A dynamic city government in Ontario is seeking a Health and Safety Associate (Co-op Student Vacancy) to support compliance with Health and Safety standards and training programs. Candidates should have post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety and strong interpersonal and organizational skills. This temporary role offers $22.00 per hour for approximately 4 months with a supportive work environment committed to community safety and wellness.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or have completed post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in OHSA regulations and workplace inspections is considered an asset.

Health and Safety Associate (Co-op Student Vacancy)

Reporting to: Manager of Health and Safety

Department: Human Resources

Classification: Temporary/Contract (approximately 4 months)

Salary Range: $22.00/hour

Hours of Work: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday

Starting Date: May 2026

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Review the City’s Health and Safety‑related procedures and programs for compliance with regulatory requirements, applicable standards, and guidelines
  • Observe various job duties/operations for compliance with applicable legislation and/or city policies/procedures
  • Identify ergonomic hazards, e.g., improper lifting techniques, awkward postures, and repetitive motion
  • Assist city supervisors with departmental training needs assessment and the development and delivery of safety‑related training programs

    Departments include:

    • Public Works (water distribution, waste & recycling collection, road maintenance, and garage)
    • Engineering
    • Parks
    • Arenas
    • Aquatics
    • Culture
    • Administrative Services
  • Provide support to the City’s Joint Health and Safety Committees
  • And all other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in or have completed post‑secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety
  • Previous knowledge and/or working experience in OHSA and regulations, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, training program development & delivery, and workplace inspections is considered an asset
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; able to handle fluctuating work volumes
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite
  • Must have a Class G2 driver’s license in good standing, with use of a reliable vehicle

This position is being considered under the Canada Summer Jobs Grant program. As such, to be eligible, youth must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
