Job description
Overview

The City of Iqaluit is looking for an experienced individual to join our growing team as a Firefighter / Emergency Medical Responder. This is a full-time, permanent position in the Emergency Services department. Salary is $42.40 per hour, with an average of 42 hours per week, plus an annual Settlement Allowance of $20,907.43. This role is Unionized with no staff housing available. Closing Date: September 26, 2025.

The number of firefighters hired from the Pool may differ based on vacancies and attrition due to retirements and staff turnover. Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Chief Officers, the incumbent(s) report to their immediate supervisor and are responsible for:

  • Fire/rescue response
  • Pre-hospital emergency medical care
  • Fire prevention and public education
  • Fire inspection and other duties as assigned
  • Minor maintenance of apparatus, small equipment, building and grounds
  • Call taking / dispatching appropriate emergency and non-emergency personnel

The position may require additional duties as assigned. The successful candidate must carry a pager and be able to respond to emergencies outside of the normal shift schedule.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification
  • Current CPR HCP
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter II
  • NFPA 472 or 1072 Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Valid Class 3 Driver's License
  • Air brake endorsement
  • Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status
  • Proof of Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Driver’s Abstract reflecting no more than six points in the last three years
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (within last 6 months)
  • Ability to operate communications equipment
Preferred Qualifications (equivalent or better)
  • Post-secondary education completion
  • Apprenticeship or trade certification
  • PCP or ACP certification
  • NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver Operator (recommended)
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Volunteer work in the community
  • Demonstrated experience as a firefighter
  • Knowledge of City of Iqaluit geography, streets/addresses, major buildings and hazards
  • Experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment and/or commercial vehicles
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools and portable equipment
  • Ability to operate communications equipment
Additional Information

The successful candidate must possess good interpersonal skills and the ability to work under stressful emergency situations. Ability to communicate in Inuktitut or French is an asset.

Work Schedule: Currently four days on / four days off, with two day and two night shifts. Dependability and flexibility are required and overtime may be applicable. The position requires carrying a pager and the ability to respond to emergencies outside the normal shift schedule.
