Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking an Equipment Operator to safely operate heavy equipment and perform routine maintenance to keep operations efficient.

You will assess materials, monitor contamination levels, and communicate needs to overall site staff. The role requires a valid Class 5 license, a strong safety mindset, and reliable attendance for early shifts and overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean Driver's Abstract.
  • Airbrake endorsement is an asset.
  • Minimum 1 year of commercial driving experience or completion of a truck driving program.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment including a Landfill Compactor, Dozer, Excavator, and Rock Truck.
  • High school diploma or GED; completion of a heavy equipment course; ability to obtain Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
  • Must be self-motivated and a reliable team-player; ability to read equipment gauges.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate heavy equipment and assess material for disposal.
  • Perform daily safety inspections and lubrication of equipment.
  • Operate equipment systems with proper techniques to prevent damage.
  • Report maintenance needs or safety incidents promptly to management.
  • Maintain high productivity and customer service standards.
  • Adhere to all laws, safety policies, and PPE requirements.
  • Collaborate with Helpers and Supervisors for smooth operations.
  • Assist with site maintenance and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Licensing: Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean Driver's Abstract. Airbrake endorsement is an asset.
  • Commercial Driving Experience (Asset): Minimum 1 year of commercial driving experience (or completion of an accredited truck driving school program).
  • Equipment Operation: Demonstrated ability to safely operate heavy equipment regularly including a Landfill Compactor, Dozer, Excavator, and Rock Truck.
  • Safety Commitment: Ability to successfully satisfy all company standards for safety-sensitive operational roles.
  • Reliability: Strong attendance record and flexibility to support early morning start schedules and operational overtime when needed.
  • Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Completion of a recognized heavy equipment course. Ability to obtain Landfill Operations Certification if needed.
  • Additional: Must be self-motivated and a reliable team-player. Ability to perform the four basic functions of math and to be able to read and understand the meaning of equipment gauges.

Responsibilities:
  • Safe Operation: Safely operate heavy equipment, assess incoming material for disposal to determine the contamination rates, determine when contamination levels are exceeded and communicate accordingly.
  • Safety Inspections: Perform inspection and maintenance checks of equipment daily. Grease/lubricate equipment, check and add fluids to equipment daily.
  • System Operations: Skillfully operate heavy equipment systems using proper techniques to prevent equipment damage. Clean trash and mud from tracks of heavy equipment by pulling and or cutting material away from tracks and gear mechanisms at least once daily or more frequently if needed.
  • Reporting & Maintenance: Promptly report any mechanical write-ups, hazards, or safety incidents to management. Use a two-way radio to communicate with co-workers in the field and or office regarding work activities, requirements, and priorities for the work day.
  • Service Quality: Maintain high productivity, customer service standards, and cleanliness.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhere strictly to all laws, municipal bylaws, company safety policies, and required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standards. Conform in all respects with applicable federal, provincial and local laws, regulations, ordinances and other orders and to all company policies, procedures and directives from supervisors. Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with Helpers and Supervisors to support smooth, efficient daily operations.
  • Additional Duties: Assist with site maintenance including small construction projects. Perform other operational duties as assigned by leadership.
