SUMMARY
We are hiring a Cost Accountant to join our Operations team. We are looking for someone who is dedicated to team safety and well being, being respectful, and acting with integrity. We strive for excellence in everything we do! The ideal candidate will have experience in plant cost accounting, post-job variance analysis, ERP/MIS systems, Bills of Materials (BOM) auditing, and inventory reconciliation within a high-speed commercial printing or manufacturing environment, and will align with our core values and company culture.
AS A COST ACCOUNTANT, YOU WILL MAKE YOUR IMPACT BY:
- Serving as an embedded key partner to plant leadership, analyzing manufacturing costs, material waste, machine efficiency, and job profitability across the Ottawa facility.
- Performing routine post-job variance analysis comparing estimated vs. actual costs for paper stock, ink, direct labor, machine time, and press/bindery consumables.
- Auditing Bills of Materials (BOM) and production routings to ensure ERP systems accurately reflect current shop-floor setup times, run speeds, and scrap rates.
- Investigating material and labor variances alongside department supervisors to identify root causes and execute corrective actions.
- Monitoring and reconciling inventory levels for raw materials (paper, ink, plates), work-in-process (WIP), and finished goods, including coordinating physical cycle counts.
- Reviewing fixed/variable overhead allocations and machine Budgeted Hourly Rates (BHR) by cost center in collaboration with plant leadership.
- Providing real-time cost data, waste metrics, and KPI dashboards to operational management to support lean manufacturing and waste-reduction projects.
- Evaluating the cost impact and potential ROI of plant equipment upgrades, workflow changes, or new substrate adoptions.
YOU CAN EXCEL AS A COST ACCOUNTANT IF YOU HAVE:
- Minimum of three (3) years of cost accounting, plant accounting, or financial analysis experience within a commercial printing or high-speed manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience working with Print Management Information Systems (MIS), ERP platforms (e.g., PrintFlow, EFI, Microsoft Dynamics), and shop-floor data collection systems.
- Demonstrated background in standard costing, job costing, Bills of Materials (BOM), and inventory valuation under Canadian accounting frameworks (ASPE/IFRS).
- Strong understanding of print manufacturing cost drivers, including paper caliper/yield, ink coverage, setup/makeready times, spoilage rates, and machine hourly rates.
- Advanced analytical, numerical, and mathematical skills with expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data extraction tools.
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Operations Management, or a related field from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.
