Job summary

AEMO, Australia’s independent energy system and market operator, seeks a strategic leader to shape the nation’s energy future. You will translate long-term goals into actionable 1–3 year plans, partnering with senior leaders to align initiatives with financial outcomes and investment decisions.

You will develop compelling justifications for initiatives, oversee performance reporting to the Board, and mentor junior staff, ensuring a high-performing team culture in a dynamic energy context.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in strategy development, corporate planning, or management consulting, ideally within the energy sector or a regulated utility environment.
• Proven ability to translate strategy into actionable plans, prioritise initiatives, and develop compelling justification for the initiatives that deliver stakeholder and organisational value.
• Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity, structure complex challenges, and develop clear recommendations.
• Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience preparing high-quality materials for Executive, Board, and external audiences.
• Ability to build strong relationships, drive cross-functional collaboration, and effectively manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead AEMO's annual strategic and corporate planning process, translating long-term strategy into actionable 1–3 year priorities and initiatives.
• Partner with senior leaders across the organisation to align strategic priorities with divisional plans, financial outcomes, and investment decisions.
• Develop compelling justifications for the strategic initiatives, clearly linking to stakeholder value, benefits, and organisational outcomes.
• Have oversight and accountability of strategic performance reporting by monitoring progress against key initiatives within the corporate plan, drawing critical insights on performance for Board, ELT and stakeholders, and proactively drive continuous improvement in planning and reporting frameworks.
• Prepare high-quality Board and Executive-level strategy materials, while mentoring junior team members and fostering a collaborative, high-performing team culture.
