Job summary

Balmain Public House in Sydney is seeking an experienced Senior Operations Manager to spearhead people, culture, daily operations and commercial performance. You will set expectations, lead by example and partner with the management team to deliver consistent standards.

This brand-new venue will rely on your coaching of managers, building confidence and capability, and creating an environment where staff are accountable, supported and offered growth opportunities.

Qualifications

• Experience running a pub, hotel or similar venue as a Senior Operations Manager or ready for next step.
• Solid food and beverage know-how with a strong guest experience focus.
• Hands-on, visible leadership on the floor with the team.
• Track record of developing managers and building capable teams.
• Excellent communication and people skills to bring others along.
• History of lifting venue performance and spotting growth opportunities.
• Experience building functions, events or other revenue streams.
• Comfort with P&Ls, margins and labour control.

Job description

You’ll have overall responsibility for the people, culture, day-to-day operation and commercial performance of Balmain Public House. You’ll establish clear expectations and standards, lead by example and work alongside your management team to ensure those standards are consistently delivered. Developing the team beneath you will be key. As this is a brand new venue with limited staff returning and an exciting new team coming in, we want someone who enjoys coaching managers, building their confidence and capability and creating an environment where people are accountable, supported and given the opportunity to grow.

Key responsibilities

• Leading, mentoring and backing your venue management team to do their best work
• Growing future leaders from within and building a bench that lasts
• Setting the tone for a culture where people own their work, hold each other to a high standard and enjoy coming to work
• Looking after rostering, hiring, retention and succession so the venue is always well staffed
• Setting clear standards for service and operations, and making sure they’re met every shift
• Keeping food, drinks and venue presentation sharp, so every guest gets a great experience every visit
• Owning the venue’s results, including revenue, wages, COGS and overall profit
• Spotting opportunities to grow and acting on them
• Filling the venue’s spaces by building up functions and events trade
• Becoming a familiar face in Balmain and surrounding suburbs

About you

• Experience running a pub, hotel or similar venue as a Senior Operations Manager or as a strong Assistant GM ready for the next step
• Solid food and beverage know-how, with a real feel for what makes a great guest experience
• A hands-on, visible style, someone who’s out on the floor with the team and not stuck in the office
• A track record of developing managers and building teams that perform
• Great communication and people skills, with the ability to bring others along
• A history of lifting venue performance and spotting opportunities to grow
• Experience building up functions, events or other revenue streams
• Confidence with the numbers, including P&Ls, margins and keeping labour in check
