Job description

WAYPOINT provides rapid, voluntary and individualised support to young people aged 10–17 who are on bail and at risk of re-offending or breaching their bail conditions. Through consistent relationships, practical support and individualised interventions, we work alongside young people, families and communities to strengthen protective factors and create opportunities for meaningful, lasting change.

As a Senior Case Worker, you'll combine intensive, relationship-based case management and outreach with complex case coordination, risk management and practice support for the broader team. You'll work alongside young people across the Moreton Bay region, including Redcliffe, Caboolture and Pine Rivers, while contributing to reflective practice, case reviews and the development of consistent, high-quality practice

Key responsibilities

Build trusting, consistent relationships with young people, maintaining connection through challenges, setbacks and periods of disengagement, and creating opportunities for young people to reconnect when they're ready.

Undertake comprehensive assessments and develop individualised support plans, providing direct case management for young people experiencing complex circumstances and elevated risks.

Support young people to understand and navigate their bail conditions, addressing practical barriers affecting safety, stability and their ability to meet requirements.

Deliver targeted interventions that strengthen emotional regulation, problem-solving, relationships and the skills needed to navigate challenging situations.

Provide practical outreach support and work alongside families, carers, cultural supports and significant others to strengthen relationships and protective factors.

Coordinate complex cases and multidisciplinary responses, working collaboratively with Youth Justice, courts, police and other services to address emerging risks and support continuity of care.

Contribute to risk assessment, case reviews, safety planning and escalation processes, supporting timely and proportionate responses to changing circumstances.

Provide peer consultation, mentoring and practice guidance to Case Workers, supporting reflective decision-making, professional growth and consistent practice across the team.

Contribute to practice development, quality improvement and case-file reviews, identifying opportunities to strengthen service delivery and young people's experiences and outcomes.

Maintain accurate case records and contribute to program reporting and evaluation.

About you

We're looking for people who genuinely connect with our approach to working alongside young people and bring a combination of relevant experience, skills, personal qualities and values.

You'll be a strong fit if:

Relational and grounded in your values

You believe every young person deserves dignity, respect, care and opportunity, regardless of their circumstances or behaviour. You have a natural ability to build rapport quickly, practise unconditional positive regard, remain curious about what sits beneath behaviour, and recognise that trust, consistency and genuine relationships are central to meaningful change.

Developmentally informed and compassionate

You understand that young people are still growing and learning, and that their experiences, relationships and circumstances influence their behaviour. You believe in building on their strengths and supporting their potential, while balancing accountability, professional boundaries and community safety with genuine care for their well‑being and future.

Inclusive and responsive

You bring cultural humility, respect for diversity and a commitment to equity. You are comfortable working in young people's own environments, whether at home, in court, on the street or in the community. You meet young people where they are emotionally and socially, respecting their experiences, perspectives and readiness, and adapting your approach to their individual needs.

Reflective and resilient

You are self‑aware, open to feedback and willing to question your own assumptions and learn from experience. You recognise and manage your own responses, understand the emotional demands of complex work and take responsibility for your well‑being and professional growth. You model reflective practice and support others to learn through shared reflection and constructive feedback.

Comfortable with complexity

You can hold multiple truths, navigate competing perspectives and sit with tension, uncertainty and discomfort. You bring sound judgement, adaptability and persistence, taking harm and risk seriously while remaining curious, compassionate and focused on finding practical ways forward.

Collaborative and proactive

You work well with colleagues, families, partners and complex service systems, advocating for young people and contributing to coordinated support. You bring integrity, initiative and a commitment to shared learning, mentoring and continuous improvement, helping to strengthen practice and contribute to a positive, supportive team culture.

Skills and experience

Substantial experience working directly with young people experiencing complex circumstances, particularly in youth justice, intensive case management, outreach or related community services.

Demonstrated experience in comprehensive assessment, individualised planning, targeted interventions and complex case coordination, including responding to risk and safeguarding concerns.

Strong understanding of adolescent development, trauma, disadvantage and the systems affecting young people's lives, including youth justice and bail processes.

Experience working collaboratively with statutory and community services, navigating complex systems and advocating for young people.

Experience providing peer consultation, mentoring, case review or practice support to colleagues, or demonstrated capability to undertake these responsibilities.

Relevant tertiary qualifications in youth work, social work, human services or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated capability through relevant professional and lived experience.

A clear commitment to child-safe practice, including listening to young people, respecting their rights and boundaries, recognising and responding to concerns, and helping create an environment where safety is everyone's responsibility.

We welcome applicants with experience or knowledge in family work, alcohol and other drugs, domestic and family violence, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural knowledge and community connections.

Practical requirements

Appointment is subject to RAYS’ child-safe recruitment and screening requirements, including relevant reference and background checks. You will also need:

A current Queensland driver licence.

A current Blue Card or the ability to obtain one.

A current First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain these.

Availability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings, weekends and public holidays, in response to young people's needs.
