Job description

Love a busy pub, a good crowd, and a team that knows how to bring the energy? I think we should talk!

RG McGees is looking for an Assistant Venue Manager who’s ready to roll up their sleeves, lead from the front, and help keep one of Richmond’s liveliest locals thriving. Even better, we have a massive, hotel-wide redevelopment and expansion on the horizon—making this the perfect time to get in on the ground floor and help shape the future of our venue.

With live bands, trivia, big sporting moments, gaming, and plenty of familiar faces, RGs has something happening almost every day of the week. We’re looking for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys a challenge, and understands that running a great pub takes more than just keeping the beers cold!

Whether you’re an experienced Assistant Venue Manager or a switched-on supervisor ready to take the next step, this could be the opportunity for you.

What’s the Gig?

Working alongside the General Manager, you’ll play a key role in the day-to-day running of the venue, balancing great hospitality with strong operational performance. You will be responsible for:

Leading the Crew: Coach, mentor, and motivate the team, setting high standards and building a positive workplace culture.

Keeping Things Running: Oversee daily operations and ensure every department runs smoothly.

Customer Experience: Deliver great service, build relationships with locals, and make guests want to come back.

Watching the Numbers: Assist with labour costs, budgets, and venue performance. Great vibes are important, but so is the bottom line!

Knowing Your Offering: Maintain strong standards across food, beverage, and gaming operations.

Bringing the Atmosphere: Help deliver live music, trivia, sporting events, and promotions that keep people coming through the doors.

Getting the Details Right: Maintain compliance with liquor legislation, responsible service requirements, and workplace safety standards.

Driving Improvement: Bring fresh ideas, identify opportunities, and challenge the “that’s how we’ve always done it” mentality.

So, Who Are You?

You’re a hands‑on hospitality professional who enjoys working with people, can think on your feet, and knows how to keep things moving when the pressure is on. You will bring:

Experience in a hospitality leadership or supervisory role, ideally within a pub or multi‑department venue.

A solid understanding of food and beverage operations, with gaming experience a bonus.

Confidence in leading, coaching, and developing a team.

Commercial awareness, including an understanding of labour costs and venue performance.

Strong communication, organisation, and problem‑solving skills.

A proactive mindset and the confidence to put forward new ideas.

Knowledge of liquor legislation and responsible service requirements.

Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and other key trading periods.

Most importantly, you’re a people person. You enjoy connecting with locals, aren't afraid to get your hands dirty, and understand that the best leaders lead by example.

Why RG McGees?

Because it’s anything but your standard local!

With a front bar, bistro, family‑friendly outdoor areas, sports bar with TAB and KENO, gaming, and a packed entertainment calendar, RG McGees offers plenty of variety and an opportunity to make a real impact. With a large‑scale redevelopment of the entire hotel on the way, you will have the unique chance to help guide the team through an exciting transition and launch a brand‑new era for the pub.

You’ll be joining a young, energetic crew where initiative is encouraged, ideas are welcome, and there’s always something to get stuck into.
