Year 6 Section Leader – Primary School

Responsible for academic and operational leadership of the Year 6 phase, combining classroom teaching, curriculum coordination, assessment oversight, colleague development, and student welfare.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the Year 6 teaching team across daily academic and pastoral activities.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of high‑quality teaching and learning in line with the British curriculum.
  • Guide teachers in preparing schemes of work, lesson plans, learning resources, and differentiated activities.
  • Monitor curriculum coverage and ensure learning objectives are completed within agreed timelines.
  • Oversee assessment, moderation, progress tracking and reporting for Year 6 students.
  • Review student performance data to identify strengths, learning gaps, and intervention priorities.
  • Coordinate targeted support for students below expected attainment levels.
  • Encourage appropriate extension opportunities for high‑performing students.
  • Mentor teachers and provide practical guidance on classroom management, assessment and instructional practice.
  • Conduct lesson observations, learning walks, book reviews and professional feedback discussions.
  • Support new teachers and help them understand school procedures, curriculum expectations and section priorities.
  • Organise regular Year 6 team meetings and maintain clear records of decisions and follow‑up actions.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to implement school policies, improvement plans and academic initiatives.
  • Support the transition of Year 6 students into secondary school.
  • Maintain high expectations for student behaviour, attendance, wellbeing and academic engagement.
  • Work with inclusion teams to support students with additional learning needs.
  • Ensure safeguarding, child protection, health and safety procedures are followed consistently.
  • Communicate clearly with parents and carers regarding student progress, welfare, behaviour and school activities.
  • Participate in parent meetings, information sessions, school events, assemblies and extracurricular programmes.
  • Help coordinate Year 6 trips, celebrations, projects, assessments and transition activities.
  • Maintain accurate academic records, reports, assessment information and section documentation.
  • Promote collaboration, accountability, professional learning and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Undertake other reasonable leadership and teaching duties assigned by school management.
Ideal Profile
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education or a relevant primary teaching subject.
  • Recognised teaching qualification such as B.Ed, PGCE or equivalent.
  • 1–2 years of experience in a leadership, coordination or phase leader role.
  • Previous leadership experience within a primary school strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of the British curriculum and Year 6 learning expectations.

  • Strong classroom teaching and behaviour management capability.

  • Confident relationship‑building skills with students, parents, colleagues and senior leaders.
  • Strong organisational ability with careful attention to deadlines and academic documentation.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, inclusion, student wellbeing and transition planning.
  • Ability to remain composed, practical and solution‑focused in a busy school environment.
