Role Context
The Senior BIM-CAD Technician - Utility Models will develop and control digital design information for complex infrastructure projects involving wet utilities, dry utilities, roads, structures, and existing service networks. The position requires close coordination with BIM leadership, design managers, engineers and CAD teams to convert engineering inputs into coordinated drawings and models. A central part of the role is identifying model conflicts before they affect construction or approvals. Through disciplined checking, issue management and revision control the technician will help improve design accuracy, reduce rework and maintain dependable project records.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and update BIM models and CAD drawings for wet and dry utility infrastructure.
- Develop utility layouts, profiles, routing plans, cross‑sections, assemblies, flow sheets, isometrics and construction details.
- Create Civil3D pipe networks using approved design data, survey information and engineering criteria.
- Coordinate model inputs with BIM managers, design leads, discipline engineers and other CAD teams.
- Confirm that required design information is received on time and raise missing‑input issues before they affect deadlines.
- Perform clash detection and coordinated model review using Navisworks.
- Record clashes, assign issues, follow up corrective actions and verify that agreed resolutions are incorporated.
- Identify conflicts involving utility corridors, roads, structures, drainage systems, landscaping and existing services.
- Support BIM activities from project mobilisation and model setup through final submission and closeout.
- Apply project naming conventions, file structures, modelling procedures and information exchange requirements.
- Review drawings for technical readability, visual consistency, correct annotation and presentation quality.
- Complete checks in line with approved quality assurance and quality control procedures.
- Create parametric and non‑parametric families, blocks, templates and project‑specific digital content.
- Extract schedules, quantities and asset‑related information directly from coordinated models.
- Prepare deliverables for concept, preliminary, detailed design, authority review, tender and construction stages.
- Support submissions to clients, stakeholders, DEWA, Dubai Municipality, RTA and other relevant authorities.
- Apply the correct Level of Development for each model element and project phase.
- Maintain design change records, model revisions, review comments, approvals and issue histories.
- Manage drawing and model information within Autodesk Forma, Bentley ProjectWise or other approved Common Data Environment platforms.
- Archive completed drawings, models, schedules, reports and supporting documents in an organised digital structure.
- Coordinate with engineers to resolve design inconsistencies, data gaps and drawing discrepancies.
- Customise CAD workspaces, templates, scripts and productivity tools where appropriate.
- Support preparation of right‑of‑way drawings and coordinated utility corridor information.
- Assist with technical training and knowledge sharing across the BIM and CAD team.
- Monitor personal deliverables and coordinate competing priorities across several projects.
- Ensure final models and drawings remain accurate, traceable and suitable for future auditing.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Civil Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of CAD drafting and BIM experience within the UAE or wider Middle East and Africa region.
- At least 3 years of direct utility pipe network modelling experience.
- Strong project exposure involving wet utilities and dry utilities.
- Advanced working capability in AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil3D and Navisworks.
- Practical experience using Autodesk Forma and Bentley ProjectWise.
- Knowledge of MicroStation is preferred.
- Strong understanding of Common Data Environment workflows and digital model production.
- Detailed knowledge of BIM processes and Level of Development requirements.
- Familiarity with ISO19650 information management principles.
- Experience carrying out clash detection, issue tracking and model‑based design reviews.
- Good knowledge of DEWA, Dubai Municipality and RTA standards.
- Understanding of existing utility management, protection requirements and service coordination.
- Ability to prepare utility models, layout drawings, profiles, cross‑sections and routing plans.
- Experience producing model schedules and quantity extracts.
- Strong knowledge of drawing checks, revision management and digital document control.
- Ability to interpret engineering sketches, technical instructions, survey information and design calculations.
- Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to identify coordination issues early.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet demanding project deadlines.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
- Willingness to guide colleagues and contribute to team capability development.
