Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Build competence in design processes including research, ideation, modelling, prototyping, manufacture, testing, and evaluation.
  • Develop students ' understanding of materials, processes, manufacturing methods, mechanisms, structures, and product design principles.
  • Guide students in selecting appropriate tools, equipment, materials, and techniques for practical projects.
  • Demonstrate safe and effective workshop procedures and ensure students follow health and safety expectations.
  • Apply evidence-informed teaching strategies to improve technical knowledge, retention, and independent application.
  • Support students in producing clear design documentation, annotated concepts, technical drawings, and development work.
  • Integrate digital design and computer-aided approaches where appropriate to curriculum requirements.
  • Help students evaluate existing products and understand functionality, sustainability, user needs, and commercial considerations.
  • Differentiate practical and theoretical tasks to support students with varied levels of experience and ability.
  • Assess design portfolios, practical outcomes, written work, and technical understanding against curriculum criteria.
  • Provide specific feedback that helps students improve accuracy, craftsmanship, design reasoning, and evaluation.
  • Prepare learners for GCSE, A-Level, or other relevant Design Technology assessments where applicable.
  • Maintain an organised, safe, and productive workshop or specialist classroom environment.
  • Monitor the condition and appropriate use of tools, machines, materials, and specialist resources.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning, moderation, cross-curricular projects, and departmental improvement.
  • Contribute to exhibitions, competitions, STEM initiatives, enrichment activities, and wider school projects.
  • Participate actively in instructional coaching, professional learning, and whole-school development.
  • Uphold safeguarding and professional responsibilities in all classroom, workshop, and extracurricular activities.
Ideal Profile
  • B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE or equivalent recognised teaching qualification in Design Technology or a closely related subject.
  • Minimum two years of experience teaching the National Curriculum of England.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching within a British curriculum environment.
  • Strong subject knowledge across practical and theoretical elements of Design Technology.
  • Proven record of delivering high-quality teaching and positive student outcomes.
  • Experience working effectively within a high-performing teaching team.
  • Confidence managing workshop-based learning and specialist practical activities.
  • Strong understanding of design processes, materials, manufacturing techniques, and product development.
  • Ability to teach students how to progress from initial concept through prototyping and evaluation.
  • Familiarity with digital design, CAD, or related design technologies is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety requirements within practical learning environments.
  • Ability to assess both practical outcomes and design documentation accurately.
