Overview

The Consultant Plastic Surgeon – Microvascular Surgery will deliver advanced reconstructive and microsurgical care for patients with complex tissue defects caused by cancer treatment, trauma, congenital conditions, infection, or previous surgery. Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the role requires advanced expertise in breast, head and neck, limb, soft‑tissue, and trauma reconstruction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive consultations for patients requiring microvascular, plastic, and reconstructive surgery.
  • Review medical history, previous procedures, imaging findings, pathology reports, functional limitations, and reconstructive goals.
  • Develop individualized surgical plans based on defect size, tissue availability, vascular anatomy, donor‑site suitability, and patient health.
  • Perform complex microvascular and reconstructive surgical procedures.
  • Perform microsurgical free‑flap reconstruction using appropriate donor tissues and vascular techniques.
  • Perform arterial and venous microvascular anastomoses with a high level of technical precision.
  • Provide breast reconstruction following mastectomy, cancer treatment, trauma, or surgical complications.
  • Perform head and neck reconstruction following tumor resection, trauma, infection, or congenital abnormality.
  • Manage upper‑limb and lower‑limb defects requiring soft‑tissue coverage, bone reconstruction, or functional restoration.
  • Provide reconstructive surgery for patients with severe trauma, chronic wounds, burns, infection, and extensive tissue loss.
  • Perform local, regional, pedicled, perforator, and free‑flap procedures according to clinical requirements.
  • Assess peripheral nerve injuries and perform nerve repair or reconstruction where appropriate.
  • Conduct detailed pre‑operative assessments and determine surgical fitness, donor‑site options, and operative risk.
  • Explain the proposed procedure, expected outcome, possible complications, rehabilitation needs, and alternative treatments.
  • Obtain informed consent and ensure patients understand each stage of the reconstructive pathway.
  • Provide postoperative care with close monitoring of flap perfusion, vascular patency, wound healing, infection, and pain.
  • Recognize vascular compromise and other complications requiring urgent surgical review or flap salvage.
  • Coordinate physiotherapy, occupational therapy, scar management, and long‑term functional rehabilitation.
  • Provide inpatient consultations and structured outpatient follow‑up.
  • Collaborate with oncology, breast surgery, head and neck surgery, orthopedics, trauma, anesthesia, and rehabilitation teams.
  • Participate in tumor boards, trauma meetings, reconstructive conferences, and multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Maintain accurate consultation records, operative reports, consent documentation, treatment plans, and follow‑up notes.
  • Ensure compliance with Dubai Health Authority requirements, hospital policies, and clinical governance standards.
  • Follow surgical safety, infection prevention, blood management, medication safety, and patient confidentiality protocols.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, outcome monitoring, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Help develop microsurgical pathways, postoperative monitoring protocols, and reconstructive service standards.
  • Provide teaching, clinical supervision, and mentorship to residents, fellows, nurses, and junior surgeons.
  • Participate in research, professional conferences, continuing medical education, and departmental development activities.
  • Remain current with advances in microsurgery, tissue reconstruction, regenerative techniques, and surgical technology.
Candidate Requirements
  • MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
  • Recognized specialist or consultant qualification in Plastic Surgery.
  • Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent accredited qualification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • Advanced fellowship training or substantial documented experience in Microvascular Surgery.
  • Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant‑level licensure.
  • Extensive experience performing microvascular and reconstructive surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrated expertise in microsurgical free‑flap reconstruction and vascular anastomosis.
  • Strong experience in breast, head and neck, limb, trauma, and soft‑tissue reconstruction.
  • Proven ability to manage complex oncological, traumatic, and multidisciplinary reconstructive cases.
  • Advanced knowledge of flap anatomy, donor‑site selection, vascular assessment, wound care, and postoperative flap monitoring.
