Role Overview

Consultant Plastic Surgeon – Microsurgery (Full‑time) located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

We are seeking an experienced microsurgeon to provide advanced reconstructive and microvascular care for patients with complex tissue loss due to cancer, trauma, congenital abnormalities, infection, or chronic wounds. The consultant will perform free‑tissue transfer, flap reconstruction, nerve repair, and related procedures while collaborating with oncology, breast surgery, head and neck surgery, orthopedics, trauma, anesthesia, rehabilitation, and nursing teams.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patients requiring microvascular, plastic, and reconstructive surgical care.
  • Review medical histories, diagnostic imaging, pathology, vascular status, and functional limitations.
  • Develop comprehensive reconstructive plans based on defect characteristics, donor‑site suitability, patient health, and rehabilitation goals.
  • Perform complex microvascular free‑tissue transfer and reconstructive procedures.
  • Conduct arterial and venous anastomoses using advanced microsurgical techniques.
  • Provide autologous breast reconstruction following mastectomy, cancer treatment, trauma, or surgical complications.
  • Perform head and neck reconstruction following oncological resection, trauma, infection, or congenital abnormalities.
  • Manage upper‑limb and lower‑limb defects requiring soft‑tissue coverage, bone reconstruction, nerve repair, or limb salvage.
  • Provide reconstructive treatment for severe trauma, burns, chronic wounds, infection, and extensive tissue loss.
  • Execute local, regional, pedicled, perforator, and free‑flap procedures as clinically required.
  • Evaluate peripheral nerve injuries and perform microsurgical nerve repair or reconstruction where appropriate.
  • Coordinate reconstructive procedures with oncological, orthopedic, trauma, breast, and head and neck treatment plans.
  • Conduct detailed pre‑operative assessments, including surgical fitness, donor‑site evaluation, and risk analysis.
  • Explain surgical options, expected outcomes, potential complications, recovery requirements, and alternatives to patients and families.
  • Obtain informed consent and ensure patients understand each stage of the reconstructive care pathway.
  • Provide postoperative monitoring with focus on flap perfusion, vascular patency, wound healing, infection, and pain control.
  • Recognize vascular compromise or other complications and provide urgent surgical intervention when required.
  • Coordinate physiotherapy, occupational therapy, scar management, and long‑term functional rehabilitation.
  • Provide inpatient consultation and structured outpatient follow‑up throughout recovery.
  • Participate in tumor boards, trauma conferences, reconstructive planning meetings, and multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Collaborate with oncologists, breast surgeons, ENT surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and rehabilitation teams.
  • Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative reports, consent records, treatment plans, and follow‑up documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with Dubai Health Authority requirements, hospital policies, and clinical governance standards.
  • Follow surgical safety, infection prevention, blood management, medication safety, confidentiality, and patient identification protocols.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, surgical outcome monitoring, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development of microsurgical protocols, postoperative flap monitoring pathways, and reconstructive service standards.
  • Teach and mentor residents, fellows, junior surgeons, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Participate in research, professional conferences, continuing medical education, and departmental development activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge of advances in microsurgery, tissue reconstruction, regenerative medicine, and surgical technology.
Qualifications
  • MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree.
  • Recognized specialist or consultant qualification in Plastic Surgery.
  • Board certification, fellowship, or equivalent accredited qualification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • Advanced fellowship training or substantial documented expertise in Microvascular Surgery.
  • Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant‑level licensure.
  • Extensive experience performing advanced microvascular and reconstructive procedures.
  • Demonstrated competence in free‑flap reconstruction and microsurgical vascular anastomosis.
  • Strong experience in breast, head and neck, limb, trauma, and soft‑tissue reconstruction.
  • Proven ability to manage complex oncological, traumatic, and multidisciplinary reconstructive cases.
  • Advanced knowledge of flap anatomy, donor‑site selection, vascular assessment, wound management, and postoperative monitoring.
  • Excellent technical ability, clinical judgment, surgical planning, and emergency decision‑making skills.
  • Strong communication and patient‑counselling capabilities.
  • Excellent multidisciplinary teamwork, leadership, teaching, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to evidence‑based surgery, ethical practice, clinical quality, and patient safety.
  • Ability to work effectively in high‑acuity and multicultural healthcare environment.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English; Arabic language skills are an advantage.
Preferred Expertise
  • Fellowship training from a recognised high‑volume microsurgery or reconstructive surgery centre.
  • Expertise in autologous breast reconstruction and perforator flap procedures.
  • Experience in oncological head and neck reconstruction.
  • Advanced skills in limb salvage following major trauma or tumour resection.
  • Experience in peripheral nerve repair and functional reconstruction.
  • Familiarity with super‑microsurgery, lymphatic reconstruction, and advanced microsurgical technologies.
  • Previous experience in a tertiary hospital, trauma centre, cancer centre, or academic medical institution.
  • Participation in reconstructive surgery research, academic teaching, outcome registries, or peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Experience establishing microsurgical services, clinical pathways, or quality improvement programmes.
  • Previous healthcare experience in the UAE or wider GCC region.
