Overview

The Consultant - Microvascular Surgery will provide advanced plastic, reconstructive, and microsurgical care for patients requiring restoration of form, function, and tissue integrity. Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, this senior position involves complex breast, head and neck, limb, trauma and soft‑tissue reconstruction using internationally recognized clinical and surgical standards.

Role Summary

The Consultant - Microvascular Surgery will evaluate and treat patients with complex reconstructive needs arising from cancer surgery, trauma, congenital conditions, infection, tissue loss, or previous surgical procedures. The consultant will perform microsurgical free‑tissue transfer, vascular anastomosis, nerve repair, flap reconstruction, and other advanced plastic and reconstructive procedures. The surgeon will collaborate with oncologists, breast surgeons, head and neck surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, trauma specialists, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, rehabilitation professionals, nurses and allied healthcare teams. The role requires meticulous operative technique, sound clinical judgment, multidisciplinary coordination, and a strong commitment to functional and patient‑centred outcomes.

Core Duties
  • Conduct comprehensive consultations for patients requiring plastic, reconstructive, or microvascular surgery.
  • Review medical history, previous operations, imaging studies, pathology findings, functional limitations and reconstructive goals.
  • Develop individualized surgical plans based on tissue defects, vascular anatomy, patient health, functional requirements and expected outcomes.
  • Perform complex microvascular and reconstructive surgical procedures within approved clinical privileges.
  • Conduct microsurgical free‑flap reconstruction using appropriate tissue‑transfer techniques.
  • Perform arterial and venous anastomosis using advanced microsurgical methods.
  • Provide breast reconstruction following mastectomy, cancer treatment, trauma or previous surgical complications.
  • Perform head and neck reconstruction following tumour removal, trauma, infection or congenital abnormality.
  • Manage upper‑limb and lower‑limb defects requiring soft‑tissue coverage, bone reconstruction, nerve repair or functional restoration.
  • Provide reconstructive surgery for patients with major trauma, tissue loss, burns, chronic wounds or complex surgical defects.
  • Perform local, regional, pedicled and free‑flap procedures according to clinical requirements.
  • Assess patients for nerve injury and perform microsurgical nerve repair or reconstruction where appropriate.
  • Coordinate reconstructive care with oncological, orthopaedic, maxillofacial and trauma treatment plans.
  • Conduct detailed pre‑operative assessments and evaluate surgical fitness, donor‑site suitability and procedural risk.
  • Explain treatment options, surgical risks, alternatives, expected outcomes and rehabilitation requirements to patients and families.
  • Obtain informed consent and ensure patients understand the planned reconstructive pathway.
  • Provide post‑operative monitoring with particular attention to flap perfusion, vascular compromise, wound healing, infection and pain control.
  • Identify and manage post‑operative complications promptly, including returning patients to theatre when urgent flap salvage is required.
  • Coordinate rehabilitation, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, scar management and long‑term functional recovery.
  • Provide inpatient consultations and outpatient follow‑up throughout the reconstructive care pathway.
  • Collaborate with breast surgeons, oncologists, ENT surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, anaesthesiologists and rehabilitation teams.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumour boards, trauma meetings, reconstructive planning conferences and complex case discussions.
  • Maintain accurate consultation notes, operative reports, consent documentation, treatment plans and follow‑up records.
  • Ensure compliance with Dubai Health Authority requirements, hospital policies and clinical governance standards.
  • Follow surgical safety, infection prevention, blood management, medication safety, confidentiality and patient identification protocols.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, clinical audits, outcome reviews and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support the development of reconstructive surgery pathways, microsurgical protocols and post‑operative monitoring standards.
  • Teach and mentor junior surgeons, residents, fellows, nurses and other clinical professionals.
  • Participate in research, academic presentations, professional conferences and Continuing Medical Education activities.
  • Remain current with developments in microsurgery, regenerative medicine, reconstructive techniques, surgical technology and enhanced recovery.
Required Skills and Experience
  • MBBS, MD or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
  • Recognised specialist or consultant qualification in Plastic Surgery.
  • Board certification, fellowship or equivalent accredited training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • Advanced fellowship training or substantial documented expertise in Microvascular Surgery.
  • Eligibility for Dubai Health Authority consultant‑level licensure.
  • Extensive clinical and surgical experience in microvascular and reconstructive surgery.
  • Demonstrated competence in free‑flap surgery, microsurgical vascular anastomosis, tissue transfer and complex reconstruction.
  • Strong experience in breast, head and neck, limb, trauma and soft‑tissue reconstruction.
  • Proven ability to manage complicated surgical defects and multidisciplinary reconstructive cases.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of flap anatomy, vascular assessment, donor‑site selection, wound management and post‑operative monitoring.
  • Strong surgical judgment, technical precision, clinical reasoning and emergency decision‑making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to explain complex reconstructive procedures and possible outcomes clearly and compassionately.
  • Strong multidisciplinary teamwork, leadership, teaching and patient‑management skills.
  • Commitment to evidence‑based surgery, clinical quality, ethical practice and patient safety.

Preferred Expertise
  • Fellowship training from a recognised high‑volume microvascular or reconstructive surgery centre.
  • Advanced expertise in autologous breast reconstruction.
  • Experience in oncological head and neck reconstruction.
  • Expertise in limb salvage and reconstruction following severe trauma.
  • Experience in peripheral nerve repair and functional reconstruction.
  • Familiarity with perforator flaps, supermicrosurgery, lymphatic surgery and advanced microsurgical technologies.
  • Previous employment within a tertiary hospital, trauma centre, cancer centre or academic medical institution.
  • Participation in reconstructive surgery research, clinical trials, teaching or peer‑reviewed publications.
  • Experience developing microsurgical services, clinical pathways, outcome registries or quality improvement programmes.
  • Previous professional experience in the UAE or wider GCC healthcare sector.
