Job Specification: Structural Engineer (Resident Engineer)

Location: Vereeniging Area – Gauteng, South Africa

An exciting opportunity exists to join a major greenfields industrial development project.

Overview

We are seeking a Structural Resident Engineer (RE) on behalf of our client. The successful candidate will have proven site-based construction experience and will oversee and manage the structural engineering aspects of the project in collaboration with the owner’s engineering team. This is a contract-based role spanning 19 months, starting mid-October 2025, with full-time on-site commitment.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge, hands-on construction experience, and the ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and manage on-site structural works, ensuring compliance with design specifications, standards, and quality requirements.
  • Act as the technical lead for all structural engineering issues on site.
  • Liaise and coordinate with civil, mechanical, and electrical teams to integrate structural works with other disciplines.
  • Monitor contractors’ performance on structural activities, ensuring safety, quality, and schedule adherence.
  • Provide technical guidance, resolve structural engineering queries, and coordinate with the design office as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with ECSA standards, local building codes, and industry best practices.
  • Review and control structural construction drawings, including revisions from the design office.
  • Audit and witness the execution of structural building construction, including fabrication, erection, and site installation.
  • Conduct inspections and witness testing of structural steel, concrete, and precast elements (both in workshop and on site).
  • Carry out daily quality inspections of structural works and ensure proper documentation.
  • Review and validate structural as-built drawings and applicable 3D modelling for accuracy.
  • Report progress, risks, and issues related to structural works to the project management team.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • BEng/BSc in Civil or Structural Engineering (specializing in structural design of buildings).
  • Professional registration with ECSA preferred.
  • 5–10 years of relevant engineering experience, ideally in consulting or resident engineer roles.
  • Experience in structural engineering projects for industrial or FMCG facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in on-site construction supervision.
  • Proven ability to work effectively on multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
Technical Skills & Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of structural standards, guidelines, and methods.
  • Proficiency in structural design and modelling software.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills with contractors and consultants.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to thrive under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with prior industrial project experience.
