Job summary

Jelocorp Group is seeking a Shift Supervisor to oversee maintenance, availability and utilisation of mobile mining equipment. You will ensure planned maintenance aligns with schedules and safety standards, with focus on downtime reduction and fleet reliability.

Responsibilities include supervising crews, coordinating resources, and driving a robust preventive maintenance program while maintaining high safety performance and environmental controls.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Matric.
• Trade qualification such as Diesel Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic.
• 3–5 years’ experience in surface mining or heavy-equipment operations.
• Previous supervisory or team-leader experience.
• Experience with preventive and breakdown maintenance, maintenance planning and scheduling.
• Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, powertrain, braking, steering and transmission systems.
• Valid driver’s licence, C1 or above.
• Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, planning, problem-solving and conflict-management skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and maintain high safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with mine health and safety requirements and standards.
• Conduct workplace inspections, risk assessments and safety meetings.
• Investigate incidents, near misses and equipment-related accidents, maintain housekeeping and environmental controls.
• Supervise maintenance of mobile equipment including loaders, excavators, dozers, graders and trucks.
• Ensure planned maintenance is completed on schedule and breakdown maintenance is addressed promptly.
• Identify and follow up defects, implement preventive and predictive maintenance strategies.
• Monitor availability, utilisation, MTBF, MTTR and downtime.
• Conduct daily maintenance planning meetings and review equipment status and defects.
• Allocate employees and resources, inspect work and verify repairs before release.
• Review shift handovers and ensure accurate recording of labour and downtime.
• Allocate work orders and monitor progress; ensure job cards closed correctly.
• Supervise and coordinate team, conduct toolbox talks and pre-shift meetings.
• Identify training needs and promote teamwork between shifts.
• Ensure tools, spares, PPE and workshop resources are maintained.
• Inspect completed work and ensure correct repair methods and safety systems.

Overview

The Shift Supervisor is responsible for the safe, effective and efficient supervision of maintenance, availability and utilisation of mobile equipment used in mining operations. The role ensures that maintenance is planned, completed, recorded and monitored in accordance with manufacturer specifications, statutory requirements, applicable standards and approved maintenance strategies, with the aim of minimising downtime and improving fleet reliability.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with mine health and safety requirements, workplace procedures and applicable standards.
• Conduct and participate in workplace inspections, risk assessments and safety meetings; ensure safe work procedures are followed.
• Investigate incidents, near misses and equipment-related accidents, and maintain good housekeeping and environmental controls.
• Supervise maintenance of mobile equipment, including loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, dump trucks, water trucks, telehandlers, TLBs, skid steers and other yellow fleet equipment.
• Ensure planned maintenance is completed on schedule and breakdown maintenance is attended to promptly.
• Identify and follow up defects, implement preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, and escal… immediate.
• Monitor mechanical and physical availability, equipment utilisation, MTBF, MTTR, breakdown frequency, repeat failures and downtime.
• Conduct daily maintenance planning meetings and review equipment status, outstanding defects and work in progress.
• Allocate employees and resources, monitor planned maintenance, inspect work and verify completed repairs before equipment is released safely.
• Review shift handovers, outstanding job cards and system notifications; ensure labour, material usage and downtime are recorded accurately.
• Allocate work orders to competent employees, monitor progress and ensure job cards are completed and closed correctly.
• Supervise and coordinate employees, monitor attendance and productivity, and conduct toolbox talks and pre-shift meetings.
• Identify training needs, coach employees, address poor workmanship and promote teamwork between shifts.
• Ensure tools, specialised equipment, critical spares, PPE and workshop resources are available and properly maintained.
• Inspect completed work and ensure correct repair methods, component installation and equipment safety systems are maintained.
• Prepare fleet status, breakdown, shift, downtime, repeat-failure and safety reports.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 / Matric.
• Relevant trade qualification, such as Diesel Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic.
• Relevant mining or mobile-equipment maintenance experience.
• Previous supervisory or team-leader experience.
• Approximately 3–5 years’ experience in surface mining or heavy-equipment operations.
• Experience with preventive and breakdown maintenance, maintenance planning and scheduling.
• Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, powertrain, braking, steering and transmission systems.
• Knowledge of breakdown diagnostics, root-cause analysis, equipment reliability and fleet performance monitoring.
• Valid driver’s licence, C1 or above.
• Strong leadership, communication, decision-making, planning, problem-solving and conflict-management skills.
• Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and maintain high safety standards.
