Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Underwriter for a fully remote role anchored in Gauteng. Based in Tembisa, you will assess applications, set terms and premiums, and guide risk strategies while supporting a remote portfolio.

You will develop underwriting policies, collaborate with brokers, review exceptions, and ensure regulatory compliance with a focus on profitability and growth in the South African market.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
• Professional designations such as ACII or equivalent are highly desirable.
• Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in insurance underwriting.
• Proven track record underwriting complex risks across lines of business.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate insurance applications, assess risks and determine terms, conditions, and premiums.
• Analyze financial data, medical records, property reports, and other relevant information for underwriting decisions.
• Develop and implement underwriting policies and guidelines to manage risk.
• Collaborate with agents and brokers to understand needs and provide expert underwriting advice.
• Monitor and manage a portfolio of risks, identify trends and issues.
• Review and approve exceptions to standard underwriting guidelines.
• Conduct market research to identify opportunities and threats.
• Mentor and support junior underwriters, sharing expertise and best practices.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
