Job summary

A leading client in the Oil & Gas sector is hiring a Senior Process Safety Engineer to join their East London team. You will identify, assess, and mitigate process hazards, and develop robust PSM programs to ensure regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities include leading PHAs (HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA), conducting QRAs, maintaining SIS and SCE lists, and driving mechanical integrity. You will investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years in process safety engineering, preferably Oil & Gas or petrochemical.
• Strong knowledge of PSM standards (OSHA PSM, EPA RMP).
• Experience with HAZOP/LOPA/FMEA.
• Familiarity with SIS and IEC 61508/61511.
• Excellent analytical and communication skills.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a meticulous and experienced Senior Process Safety Engineer to join their team in East London. This critical role focuses on ensuring the safety of our client's Oil & Gas operations by identifying, assessing, and mitigating process-related hazards. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing robust process safety management (PSM) programs, conducting risk analyses, and ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of chemical processes and safety engineering principles, contributing to a secure and reliable operational environment in the Eastern Cape.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and participate in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), including HAZOP, LOPA, and FMEA studies.
• Develop, implement, and manage Process Safety Management (PSM) programs in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
• Perform quantitative risk assessments (QRAs) to evaluate the likelihood and consequences of potential incidents.
• Review and approve process design changes, ensuring that safety implications are thoroughly assessed.
• Develop and maintain safety-critical equipment (SCE) lists and ensure their integrity through effective mechanical integrity programs.
• Investigate process safety incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in process safety engineering, specifically within the Oil & Gas industry or petrochemical sector.
• In-depth knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM) standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, EPA RMP).
• Experience with risk assessment methodologies such as HAZOP, LOPA, and FMEA.
• Familiarity with safety instrumented systems (SIS) and relevant standards (e.g., IEC 61508/61511).
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills.
