Job summary

thyssenkrupp Uhde South Africa seeks an experienced Senior Piping Engineer for its Piping & Layout Engineering Department in Durban. The role focuses on front-end and detailed piping design for Petrochemical, Refinery and Chemical Plants, with emphasis on LPG and cryogenic systems.

Ideal candidate holds a Mechanical Engineering degree, is ECSA-registered, and brings 15+ years in contracting environments with energy/chemical projects. Lead engineer capabilities and strong QA are essential.

Qualifications

• Must hold a recognised mechanical engineering degree and be a registered professional engineer.
• Minimum 10 years in piping engineering with 15+ years preferred.
• Experience in energy, chemical, refining or petrochemical projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineer for piping & layout design across Petrochemical, Refinery and Chemical Plants.
• Foster client engagement as part of the owner’s team and manage consultants.
• Oversee FEED/Detail design, 3D model reviews, and constructability checks.
• Conduct PFD/PID reviews, HAZOP & SIL studies and stress analysis.
• Develop scopes of work and project standards, specs, and QA.
• Coordinate with project schedule, manpower planning and deliverables.

Your responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced Senior Piping Engineer with relevant design house experience to join the Piping & Layout Engineering Department.

The successful candidate will be required to fulfil the job as summarised below, but not limited to:

• Interaction with the client and forming part of an owner’s team with the client
• Performing lead engineer role.
• Perform manpower planning and project schedule management for the project process team
• Preparation of Scope of Work / Works Information for supply of services and management of consultants to deliver to scope, quality and schedule.
• Preparation of project standards, engineering and technical specifications
• Participate in PFD and P&ID Reviews, HAZOP & SIL reviews
• Lead 3D model and constructability reviews
• Front end and detail Piping Design for Petrochemical, Refinery and Chemical Plants
• Stress analysis and flexibility calculations
• Design of pressure piping systems for: columns, drums, pumps, re-boilers, heat exchangers, air coolers, reactors, compressors, fired heaters, etc.

The scope of this role will require the incumbent to work in a projects based environment covering all phases of project execution (feasibility, concept, basic, detail, construction support and commissioning).

The individual will engage in piping design activities related to producing and checking piping/ layout engineering deliverables.

The individual will be responsible for piping deliverables and quality/ technical quality assurance on the project.

Your profile

• The successful candidate must be in possession of a BSc./ BEng./ BTech Mechanical Engineering degree with 10 years engineering experience. 15+ years of experience is preferable.
• Experience in contracting environment working on projects in the energy and chemical/ refining / petrochemical industries is required.
• Lead Engineer Experience
• Professional Registration with ECSA is required.
• The candidate must have refrigerated LPG, cryogenic storage, terminal, marine, EPC and brownfields experience. Strong LPG experience is essential.
• Experience with relevant codes for LPG facilities.
