Placements24 in Johannesburg, Gauteng, is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to drive ground control strategies for both underground and open-pit mining operations. You will assess geological conditions, design support systems, and provide expert advice to mine planning and operations.

The role requires 8+ years in geotechnical engineering within mining, proficiency with FLAC, Phase2 and RocData, and strong communication.

Qualifications

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in geotechnical engineering, with significant mining sector exposure.
Demonstrated expertise in rock mechanics, soil mechanics, and hydrogeology.
Proficiency in geotechnical software (FLAC, Phase2, RocData).
Strong understanding of underground and open-pit mining methods and their geotechnical implications.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
Membership in a relevant professional engineering body is highly advantageous.

Responsibilities

Conduct detailed site investigations and geotechnical assessments for current and future mining projects.
Develop, implement, and monitor ground control management plans to ensure safety and stability.
Design and specify appropriate support systems for underground and open-pit environments.
Utilize advanced geotechnical software for modelling and analysis of rock mass behaviour.
Provide expert geotechnical advice to mine planning, engineering, and operations teams.
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for management and stakeholders.
Investigate and analyse ground-related incidents and recommend corrective actions.
Mentor junior geotechnical engineers and contribute to team development.
Stay abreast of the latest advancements in geotechnical engineering and mining technology.
