Placements24 on behalf of a leading mining client in Johannesburg, Gauteng, seeks a Senior Rock Engineering Geologist to lead geotechnical analysis and support across open-pit and underground operations.

The role focuses on rock mechanics, monitoring programs, and integrating geotechnical recommendations into mine plans, with hands-on use of FLAC and Map3D, and mentorship of junior staff.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of progressive experience in rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering within the mining industry.
• Proven expertise in geological data analysis, geotechnical logging, and mapping.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed geotechnical investigations and site characterizations for new and existing mining areas.
• Develop and implement rock mechanics monitoring programs, including data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation.
• Provide expert advice on mine design, ground support systems, and stability analysis to optimize safety and productivity.
• Utilize advanced numerical modeling software (e.g., FLAC, Map3D) to assess rock mass behavior and predict potential failures.
• Collaborate with mine engineers to integrate geotechnical recommendations into mine plans and production schedules.
• Investigate geotechnical incidents and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Prepare comprehensive technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal review and external stakeholders.
• Mentor junior geologists and engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations and company policies.
