Job summary

Placements24 seeks an experienced Geotechnical Engineer for its mining-focused technical team in Rustenburg, North West. The role emphasizes stability and safety of open-pit and underground excavations, waste dumps, and tailings facilities.

You will apply advanced geotechnical principles to assess ground conditions, design support systems, and advise on slope stability and ground control. A strong background in mining geotech is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Mining Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering. Master's degree is highly desirable.
• Minimum of 6 years of relevant geotechnical experience in mining.
• Proficiency in geotechnical software for slope stability analysis (GeoStudio, Plaxis, Slide).
• Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and hydrogeology as applied to mining.
• Experience with site investigation techniques and laboratory testing interpretation.
• Familiarity with mining codes and standards.
• Excellent report writing, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work in a team and manage multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Conduct geotechnical investigations and slope stability analyses for mining projects.
• Design and implement ground support systems for underground excavations and tunnels.
• Perform analyses of tailings dams and waste rock dumps, including seepage and stability evaluations.
• Develop site investigation programs with drilling, sampling, and in-situ testing.
• Interpret data to provide engineering recommendations.
• Monitor ground conditions and performance of geotechnical structures.
• Prepare geotechnical reports and construction specifications.
• Collaborate with mining engineers and geologists to integrate geotechnical considerations into mine planning.
• Ensure compliance with mining regulations and safety standards.
• Provide guidance on geohazard identification and mitigation.
