Placements24 is seeking a Senior Data Privacy Lawyer to guide the company through POPIA and GDPR in a remote-first setup. You will develop robust privacy strategies and implement policies across the organization.

You will partner with IT, compliance, and business leaders to ensure privacy by design, conduct DPIAs, manage data transfers, and train staff while monitoring global privacy developments.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

About the Role

Our client is looking for a specialized and forward-thinking Senior Data Privacy Lawyer to join their team, operating in a remote-first capacity. This role is critical in guiding the company through the complex landscape of data protection laws, including POPIA and GDPR. You will be responsible for developing and implementing robust data privacy strategies, policies, and procedures across the organization. This position requires deep expertise in privacy regulations, a proactive approach to risk management, and the ability to translate intricate legal requirements into practical business solutions. You will work closely with IT, compliance, and business leaders to ensure privacy by design and default.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive data privacy policies and procedures aligned with POPIA, GDPR, and other relevant regulations.


• Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and Privacy by Design reviews for new projects and systems.


• Advise on data subject rights requests, data breach incidents, and regulatory investigations.


• Provide legal guidance on data processing agreements, cross-border data transfers, and third-party vendor agreements.


• Develop and deliver privacy training programs to employees across various departments.


• Stay abreast of evolving data privacy laws and best practices globally, advising on their impact.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney with at least 8 years of relevant legal experience, with a strong focus on data privacy and protection .


• In-depth knowledge of South African POPIA and international regulations like GDPR.


• Experience in drafting privacy policies, notices, and contractual clauses.


• Proven ability to manage complex privacy projects and compliance initiatives.


• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, adept at remote collaboration.
