Placements24 is seeking a knowledgeable Data Protection Lawyer to join the legal team in a fully remote capacity, serving clients across Soweto and beyond. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with POPIA, advising on data processing activities, and managing data breach responses.

You will draft privacy policies, conduct DPIAs, handle data subject requests, and deliver staff training while operating independently in a remote environment.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a knowledgeable and proactive Data Protection Lawyer to join their legal team, operating in a fully remote capacity to serve their clients across Soweto and beyond. This role is integral to ensuring the company's compliance with data privacy laws, including the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). You will advise on data processing activities, draft privacy policies, manage data breach responses, and conduct privacy impact assessments. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of data privacy regulations, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to provide practical legal guidance in a remote setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Advise on all aspects of data protection law, including POPIA and other relevant privacy regulations.
• Draft, review, and update privacy policies, consent forms, and data processing agreements.
• Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) for new projects and systems.
• Manage and respond to data subject access requests and complaints.
• Develop and deliver training programs on data protection best practices.
• Assist in managing data breaches, including notification procedures and remediation efforts.
• Liaise with the Information Regulator and other relevant authorities as needed.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney with at least 5 years of experience, with a significant focus on data privacy and protection law.
• In-depth understanding of South Africa's POPIA and related international data protection principles (e.g., GDPR).
• Experience in drafting privacy policies and managing data subject rights requests.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively in a remote environment.
• Excellent communication and training skills to educate staff on data protection matters.
