Placements24 is seeking a specialized Legal Counsel focused on technology and data privacy for a fully remote role. You will guide software licensing, IP strategy, and compliance with POPIA and global privacy requirements, helping shape the company’s approach to data protection and technology adoption.

You will work with international teams, handle complex tech transactions, and contribute to risk mitigation while operating in a remote-first environment.

Qualifications

• Admitted attorney with 6+ years in technology law, data privacy, or IP.
• Strong POPIA and GDPR knowledge and experience.
• Excellent drafting and negotiation skills for tech agreements.

Responsibilities

• Advise on software development, licensing, SaaS, and cloud contracts.
• Develop and implement data privacy policies compliant with POPIA and GDPR.
• Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments and breach response guidance.
• Manage IP portfolios including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
• Negotiate and draft technology contracts and SLAs.
• Provide training on data privacy and technology law.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a specialized and forward-thinking Legal Counsel focusing on Technology and Data Privacy for a fully remote position. In this critical role, you will provide expert legal guidance on cutting-edge technology matters, including software licensing, intellectual property, and complex data protection regulations like POPIA. You will be instrumental in shaping the company's approach to data privacy and technology adoption, ensuring compliance and mitigating risks. Key Responsibilities

• Advise on legal issues related to software development, licensing, SaaS agreements, and cloud computing.
• Develop and implement data privacy policies and procedures in compliance with POPIA and other relevant regulations.
• Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and advise on data breach response strategies.
• Manage intellectual property portfolios, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights related to technology.
• Negotiate and draft technology-related contracts and service level agreements.
• Provide training to internal teams on data privacy best practices and technology law compliance.

Requirements

• Admitted attorney with 6+ years of experience in technology law, data privacy, or intellectual property.
• In-depth knowledge of South African data protection laws (POPIA) and international equivalents (e.g., GDPR).
• Proven experience advising on complex technology transactions and IP matters.
• Exceptional drafting and negotiation skills for technology agreements.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, essential for effective remote teamwork.
